Patrick, dog starved to brink of death - found day before St. Patrick's in dumpster (WARNING photos)
It does look like this poor baby's hopefully going to make it, thanks to an alert maintenance worker, Newark NJ animal control, the Humane Society, and 24-hour intensive care at Garden State Veterinary Specialists. Oh, to find the lowlife creeps who did this to him... I am going to send what I can to help him:

Patrick, dog starved to the brink of death

* March 19th, 2011 9:05 pm ET * Penny Eims * Dog News Examiner

"Just one day before St. Patrick’s Day, a dog that should not technically be alive was discovered in the trash.

The dog, a red Pit bull, had been starved to the brink of death. Someone, perhaps assuming that he had finally died, put his body in a trash bag and threw him down a chute inside of a 22 story apartment complex. Had an astute maintenance worker not been paying attention, the slight movement that the starved dog made would have been missed – the bag containing his emaciated body would have been crushed inside of the trash compactor.

But Patrick has a will to live – enough will that he made his weary limbs move that day. The City of Newark animal control was contacted and they, in turn, contacted the Associated Humane Societies and Popcorn Park. Patrick was rushed to the Humane Society where he received immediate veterinary care – including fluids, food and heated blankets to warm his gaunt body. He was then transported to the Garden State Veterinary Specialists in Tinton Falls -- a referral hospital with 24 hour emergency care.

Shockingly, the courageous dog survived the night – surprising the veterinary staff. He was able to receive life-saving transfusions and even enjoyed a bath."

2. What a shame
We unfortunately have a society with too many self centered losers who would punish an animal for their lack of morality and intellect. I would have no problem making things right for what they've done to this animal.

25. I'd die if I witnessed something like this. The grief and rage would kill me.
That's why I admire vets, and why I could never, ever BE one. I couldn't witness this and still sleep at night. I couldn't see this and remain calm enough to do my duty. Please god let them catch the person who's responsible for this. And for once, let them actually go to prison instead of getting out of it with a fine, probation, and the agreement to never own pets again.

50. Especially since chances are if someone did this to a "pet" - they'd do it to a child,
or a spouse, or an elderly relative in their care.
Even benign neglect doesn't result in something like this. This dog was either intentionally starved or left alone for a very long time.
If it was the latter - if something had happened to the owner and there was no one else with daily access to care for the dog, why didn't someone step in earlier - like the building manager or a neighbor, either of whom should have realized there was a dog in the apartment?

"Patrick is off IV for now and taking medications orally. He is watched for any changes constantly. His blood tests are showing improvement in volume. Can stand a little, but not yet ambulatory. He is being fed small amounts every few hours to limit nausea. His kidneys and liver seem to be ok. He is also being treated for bedsores. This morning he was taken off IV, and there is improvements in his blood volume."

42. I assume it means the same as it would for humans:
Blood Volume

The total quantity of blood in the body. The regulation of blood volume in the circulatory system is affected by the intrinsic mechanism for fluid exchange at the capillary membranes and by hormonal influences and nervous reflexes that affect the excretion of fluids by the kidneys.

A rapid decrease in the blood volume, as in hemorrhage, greatly reduces the cardiac output and creates a condition called shock or circulatory shock. Conversely, an increase in blood volume, as when there is retention of water and salt in the body because of renal failure, results in an increase in cardiac output. The eventual outcome of this situation is increased arterial blood pressure.

Measurement of blood volume is accomplished by using substances that combine with red blood cells, for example, iron, chromium and phosphate, or substances that combine with plasma proteins. In either case the measurement of the blood volume is based on the 'dilution' principle. That is, the volume of any fluid compartment can be measured if a given amount of a substance is dispersed evenly in the fluid within the compartment, and then the extent of dilution of the substance is measured.

Of the creep(s) who were responsible for the poor dog's welfare.

I doubt that I could have ever been a member of the pet police, I would be too frequently charged with A&B on "owners" who are cruel to their pets...my wife and I spoil our three cats, and the biggest one who is a black male really needs to lose some weight, but he knows how to keep bothering my wife, when she is in our kitchen until she gives in and feeds him his favorite treats.

45. On Facebook there's more about his progress
On Facebook group/community "The Patrick Miracle" - miracle that he was found at ALL, miracle that someone cared enough to help him, miracle that he wasn't immediately put down, miracle that he is responding so well to care - and miracle that he is such a sweet sweet little guy, even with all he's been through.
Here's a few pics that Associated Humane Popcorn Park Shelter posted on the FB page, from their visit with him at Garden State today, more on their page:

http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/The-Patrick-Miracle/136427856427219
http://www.facebook.com/#!/album.php?fbid=179550698758608&id=122122364501442&aid=38909

There are over 5,000 "likes" already for the "The Patrick Miracle" - if each would adopt just one (or two, or three) homeless animals, it would be even more...

53. I thought my cat was emaciated when I found her...
...this poor dog is in heartbreaking shape. Thank goodness someone found him. I can't imagine how much this poor dog suffered.

There was a neighborhood cat that was nearly starved to death and she kept approaching me. I have an indoor cat, so I started feeding Roma. The other outdoor cats tried to chase her away from the food dish, so I would wait until they left and feed her again. She jumped in my lap on the second day that I fed her, as if she was eternally grateful. She has turned out to be one of the sweetest pets I've ever owned, especially for an outdoor cat. I'm fairly certain that poor Roma was surviving strictly on what she could catch, because she was that bad off, and there is no way should would have survived the winter.

This poor dog had to have been locked up with no access to food or water. I can't imagine how he survived. The cruelty of allowing an animal to starve to death is horrific.
