Should representatives of any nation state be able to sue their critics?

This core issue was never before polled on DU. Israel has filed a law suit against a former US President (Jimmy Carter) allegedly for making accusations in his book "Peace Not Apartheid" that their representatives disagreed with.

When nation states are able to sue individuals because they don't like criticism we are on very treacherous grounds. Even former Presidents don't have the wherewithal to fight lawsuits by governments. This is a slippery slope that needs slapped down now in my opinion in the interest of free speech.

Have no doubt that this is the next stage in muzzling public opinion against powerful corporations and countries. This is about creating fear and minimizing criticism such as stating an opinion on the internet about Israel and then getting sued for $5 million. Free speech is out the window.

The point is that 5 shills can make life miserable for anyone because of their views. Individuals can't defame countries but apparently they can now be sued for doing so. Why wasn't it thrown out on frivolous grounds of standing? It is a dangerous precedent. Who is funding it?

Yes, I do agree with the right to sue. I do not know this to be the case, as I have not read Carter's book.

As to why it hasn't been thrown out, I son't think the suit has gone before a judge at all.
