Well, duh. (Teaching Seen As Crucial In Topping Ed Rankings - AP)
Countries that outpace the U.S. in education employ many different strategies to help their students excel. They do, however, share one: They set high requirements to become a teacher, hold those who become one in high esteem and offer the instructors plenty of support.

1. K&R- damn socialist trickery!
The right does not want people in the US too knowledgable or able to make decisions or think for themselves.

2. You're right there.

The discussion in the US assumes TPTB actually want kids to be well-educated and equipped to become participants in self-government. So what we're discussing is disconnected from reality.

Edited to add that I think these international tests are the only thing that shames TPTB into giving it any thought at all - and then it's just for the sake of appearance.

4. Hey, they're rich - they *must* know what they're doing.

In every field, without exception. :sarcasm:

Well, I don't know if Rhee is rich, come to think of it. I don't know how she got *picked* to be DC supe, after having watched Waiting for Superman - she comes off as an overconfident ditz in that movie, to me.
