House votes to move forward on defunding NPR
House votes to move forward on defunding NPR

After an hour of contentious debate and over procedural objections from Democrats, the House on Thursday morning voted along party lines to move ahead on a measure that would prevent federal funds from going to National Public Radio, with a final vote on the bill expected in the afternoon.

The proposal, sponsored by Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-Colo.), would ban any federal money from going to NPR, including funding through competitive grants from federal agencies and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. NPR receives about $5 million annually in such funds. The bill would also prohibit NPR’s roughly 600 member stations from using federal funds to purchase programming from NPR and to pay station dues.

Voting in favor were 235 Republicans and one Democrat, Rep. Heath Shuler (N.C.), while all 181 Democrats present voted “no.” The final vote on the bill is expected to take place at 1:45 p.m.

The push to defund NPR follows the departure from the organization of its chief executive, Vivian Schiller, and its top fundraiser, Ron Schiller (no relation), in the wake of a hidden-camera video sting by conservative activists that showed Ron Schiller making controversial remarks about Republicans and tea party members.

5. According to Eric Cantor - less government spending equals more private
sector jobs. Gee, I wonder how that works??? Does that mean that when NPR goes away, all that programming will be filled with brand new programming produced by highly paid writers, announcers, editors, etc.? Nope. I'll bet the void is filled by current right wing programming.

8. The most complete and dependable news, and much educational and entertaining
programming on the air comes from NPR or PBS. This really makes me angry. My congressman does not care. He just keeps his head down and votes like the rest of the pubs.
