This next week in Wisconsin--Voter ID law could be voted on
As always, this has to do with R's fears of cheating (by someone other than themselves).

As proposed the ID law would restrict the right to vote to people with military IDs, driver's licenses and a state-issued ID card, a valid U.S. passport or a Tribal ID or naturalization papers.

Photo ID cards issued to college students (even those from state universities) would not be acceptable.

It's very likely they will try to do this in order to influence the April 5 Supreme Court elections--now being conducted in the heated fallout of the R's union busting.

Badgers--keep an eyeout for what's happening with this bill as they may be used against you at your polling place.

1. Out smart them
People in Wisconsin need to get out this news, and encourage college students to get a state ID. This should be a major objective all over the country where republicans are pulling this crap! If democrats act now and make sure voters are informed, and get the proper ID, we can beat them at their own game!

3. The problem goes deeper than that
Many people in the minority communities would have significant trouble getting state IDs, even though they are supposed to be free on request. The cost and hassle of ordering a birth certificate, which is required to get the ID, and just getting to the DMV office (no car, unable to take off work during open times, etc.) could mean many won't be able to vote. And low-income people and students do tend to move around more often, which would require a new ID after every move. This is outrageous on so many levels. And in a state that is "broke," it is estimated to cost several million dollars in training of election workers, changes to the voter database, providing free IDs, opening DMV offices more hours, etc. But of course preventing a very few cases of one particular type of voter fraud is more important than anything else.

2. I've been urging people to
verify their registration at the GAB website
https://vpa.wi.gov/VoterSearchScreen.aspx?Language=en-us

If you're not shown as registered, even if you've voted there for decades, REGISTER NOW!!! Go to your municipal clerk to get it taken care of.

Make sure your driver's license will not be expired on election day. They will NOT use an expired license for ID, even though it doesn't make a lot of sense that you aren't the same person you were yesterday...

4. Seems to me we could use something like the Freedom Summer of 1964
If hoards of college students and other young people could go south in 1964 to help register minority voters, why can't there be an equivalent to help the potentially disenfranchised jump through whatever hoops are necessary to get their voter ID?

It would be a great solidarity-building movement, even beyond the immediate practical payoff.
