3. No kidding
I turned on the TV for what I thought would be live, breaking news coverage and I get to pick between Lockup and recycled Piers Morgan? Don't they at least have some third string anchors hanging out in their studios???

4. Nukes exploding? No, that is not what happens when a nuclear plant melts down.
Radiation? Yes.

17. AFP reporting that Fukushima No 1 exploded
* From correspondents in Tokyo
* From: AFP
* March 12, 2011 8:00PM

A JAPANESE nuclear power plant exploded today, television footage showed, a day after a massive earthquake damaged the facility's cooling system, as nearby residents were warned to stay indoors.

Nuclear authorities had earlier warned that the Fukushima No 1 plant, located about 250km northeast of Tokyo, an urban area of 30 million people, "may be experiencing a nuclear meltdown".

The plant's cooling system was damaged in the quake that hit yesterday, leaving the government scrambling to fix the problem and evacuate more than 45,000 residents within a 10km radius.

Public broadcaster NHK today said that a blast had been heard at about 3.30pm local time and showed delayed footage of smoke billowing from the site, also reporting that the reactor building had been destroyed.

TV channels warned nearby residents to stay indoors, turn off air-conditioners and not to drink tap water. People going outside were also told to aviod exposing their skin and to cover their faces with masks and wet towels.

7. No this is not a nuclear explosion
the physics are not there.

A meltdown will not lead to THAT energetic event.

24. i haven't seen the footage yet...
but it does seem like everyone who HAS seen it mentions a very large explosion... whether it was caused by the reactor meltdown or other facilities issue, i'm not sure it matters. Wouldn't this be just as bad as a "dirty bomb" then? And couldn't someone call that a nuclear explosion?

:shrug:

Still, I find it pathetic that we do not have a 24 hour news show, not just one reserved for attacks on Iraq.

16. I just mentioned that in Turborama's thread on the earthquake.
I discovered a few days ago that we get Russian/English TV. It is very like Al Jazeera, and I just saw the footage of the explosion there and a report that says the plant may be 'meltdown'.

They are waiting for a statement now from the government and/or the head of their nuclear program.

Last report said that 4 people had been reported injured, but that looked like a pretty big explosion, I hope that is all the casualties.

You would think with all the news around the world, CNN would have some reporters ready to go on the air.

MSNBC is showing 'Lockdown' and CNN has reruns of the Piers Morgan show and Anderson Cooper from earlier tonight.

26. Perspective
This was written in the wee hours when the the explosion occurred and not one news station was live. We were frantically searching out sources in an attempt to find out what was going on and how serious it was/wasn't.

28. Not a good headline
Not "nukes" which implies a nuclear explosion, but "at a nuke plant"

OK your TV news is bad but Al Jazeera has not been up to date either Al Jazeera. Use your internet, check The Brad Blog

Post info yourself but correct it when you are wrong.
