27. Monty Burn's greatest enemy The Sun!

Smithers: Well, Sir, you've certainly vanquished all your enemies: the
Elementary School, the local tavern, the old age home...you
must be very proud.
Burns: No, not while my greatest
nemesis still provides our customers with free light, heat and
energy. I call this enemy...the sun.

Since the beginning of time man has yearned to destroy the
sun. I will do the next best thing...block it out!

Smithers: Good God!

Piqued my curiosity enough to do a little math.

The average oil output per day in 2006 was 86 million barrels a day, or 13.7×10^6 cubic meters, or .0137 cubic kilometers. So in a year, say, that amazingly works out to .0137*365= 5.0005 square kilometers. So run your 5k east, then another one north, and then another one straight up into the air. You've traced three edges of a cube of a year's worth of oil. Which isn't a lot of volume. Compared to the plates on the earth's crust your might as well be taking a sip from a well with a soda straw.

Unfortunately, oil is destroying the world by other means. :(

60. Thank you.
I just wanted to put that worry to rest.

I agree that hyper-focus on "cheap" oil energy is destroying our world.

Why we have not been much more aggressively subsidizing conservation technologies, solar and wind and mass transit, because we know how important oil is and want to keep using it for decades to come, is beyond me-- except for some very sad immediate profit motive on the part of the oil companies.

23. BFEE has moved from the hurricane machines to earthquake machines
They shot a nuclear warhead down one of the of the oil drilling sites that go 10s of thousands feet down. The resulting explosion caused the earthquake. This way the WI protest is moved off the news.

And on top of that the moon's still pissed that we crash landed on her that she used extra gravity to knock the plates outta whack, and all Women's menses will be totally fucked up this month.

Srsly, plate tectonics. Learned about Pangea in the 5th grade. And this was in Texas.

In 1961, a 12,000-foot well was drilled at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal, northeast of Denver, for disposing of waste fluids from Arsenal operations. Injection was commenced March 1962, and an unusual series of earthquakes erupted in the area shortly after. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/states/colorado/history.php

72. isn't it obvious?...it's solar flares....
....as large amounts of solar radiation propagates through the earths magnet field, resonate currents are induced in the earths core magma generating heat (12*10^43joules/cm3) bubbles....these heat bubbles travel from the center outwards at the speed of sound until they reach and collect under the mantle in vast pools near plate boundries....then, walla....

....basically, the earth's farting....
