Stay away for now-WI Dems. It's a trap-they're pretending that the matter is settled-that they won

Stay away for now, WI Dems. It's a trap.

by Seneca Doane

I hate to go all Admiral Ackbar on everyone, and maybe I'm not the first one to reach this conclusion, but it occurred to me tonight that the whole "pass the union-busting part separately" bit could be a very clever trap.

Consider: it seems like there's good reason to think that this legislative action was illegal. I'm not talking just about things like providing enough notification. I'm talking about things like that if you are considering a fiscal measure that requires 60 votes, calling part of it not a fiscal measure doesn't mean that you now need a simple majority. If it's a fiscal measure -- and in his statements over the last day or so Scott Walker has pretty much flat out said that it is -- then it requires 60 votes no matter what they call it. Any reasonable court will toss the law out.

Why would they make a big deal about passing a law that would be found void?

Simple: they're pretending that the matter is settled -- that they won, unfair and unsquare -- so that the WI Dem State Senators will come back into the state, because no further harm can be done. Then, once they're there, they have their quorum, they bring up the rest of the budget bill from the Assembly, and then they put the elimination of collective bargaining back into that bill! Then they arrest anyone who tries to leave (if they even need to), and they pass the very bill that the Dems left the state to avoid.

1. I'd thought about that myself
I don't think the Republicans are that smart.

4. If they return
I think the 14 should stand together to be arrested and brought to the Capitol for the forced passing of the bill.

That will show the it for the power grab it is.

5. Didn't Sen Erpenbach
allude to that a couple of days ago? Doesn't hurt to give his staff a call to give a little reminder, though.

Would someone who does NOT have laryngitis please call Erpenbach's office to talk with a staffer about it? We've usually been able to reach someone by phone, but with tens of thousands of emails flooding in, it would be easy for them to miss my note about it.

Thanks! :hi:

6. And that is why the governor has not signed the bill
He knows it is illegal. It is a trap - stay away Dems - stay away.
Hosni Walker should remember Marley's line about playing smart and not being clever.

10. BINGO!!!!!!
The television/radio media will start the drum beat for their return as soon as the manufactured tsunami scare passes and they reset the focus to Wisconsin: the baaaad unions, the hateful protesters and the lazy, runaway senators. I wish that the left wing had the money, strategists, discipline and politicians to keep their eyes on the prize and buy a couple of media outlets to get the word out.

14. The tsunami was manufactured?
Not to diminish the importance of Wisconsin, but the tsunami is a pretty big fucking deal.

16. The tsunami watch which media was covering like a rug was in CA
I believe what happened in Japan was an earthquake. Yes, the earthquake was a big deal. The California tsunami - more like the balloon boy.

15. On the other hand
There's no telling what other atrocities the GOPers could pass while the democrats are away. You think they're going to stop just because they got one bill passed?

17. Fortunately, the special session is pretty much over....
Edited on Fri Mar-11-11 09:18 PM by Viking12
But you're exactly right. Destroying Unions was only the first item on their agenda. When the Legislature meets for the regular session voter's rights, women's rights, environmental protections and many more things we take for granted in WI are going to be under attack by Walker and the Republican majority. They feel confident about the way they're going to do business and they're going to jam through some gut wrenching policies.
