I believe former Sen Alan Simpson has totally lost all his mental faculties.

Just saw a repeat of last night's Daily Show, and the moment of Zen at the end was Simpson carrying on about how the Americans today do not really care about their children and grandchildren. His opinion is that the parents and grand parents today do not like their offspring at all. I believe the man is now certifiable.
