Into the Light: Eva Braun's Personal Pictures

Recently released photographs from Eva Braun's personal picture albums reveal new dimensions of the woman who was Adolf Hitler's longtime girlfriend and, in their last, frantic hours together, his wife. Braun became the central woman in Hitler's life after the 1931 suicide of Geli Raubal, the future Führer's 23-year-old niece (and rumored lover). By all accounts, Eva was an unpretentious companion for the Nazi leader, but also a woman at once frivolous and vain -- unsurprising characteristics, perhaps, in a former teenage model, but striking in a figure long associated with the darkest chapters of the 20th century. This collection of rare and previously unseen photos comes from a cache of images confiscated by the U.S. Army in 1945 and brought to light by collector and curator Reinhard Schulz. 1. She was a dingbat. She decided it would be diverting to spontaneously

follow Hitler as he drove to Vienna to officially take over Austria during the Anschluss. She didn't realize the significance and the danger of the event. It was all sport to her.

7. I'm taken by how her appearance varies

In some shots she's got a fairly pretty face, in others she's downright ugly.

I guess the portrayal of her in the film 'Downfall' as an airhead fellow traveler was fairly accurate then. At least she looked better in the movie.....

9. I once held her personal photo album in my hands at the National

Archives. I never had such a case of the chills. The photos showed her and Hitler and pals having fun, looking NORMAL. That, of course, is the deeply disturbing part.

I remember seeing those photos and holding them in my hands like it was yesterday. And it was over 30 years ago.

14. I think that's almost the most stunning part of Nazi photographs

Including Hitler. The moments when they are acting like regular people - walking dogs, at the beach, playing, etc. It's hard to imagine that people that can enjoy the same things that you or I do, can also cause such immeasurable horror.

There was a show on NatGeo, I think, about a photograph album that was recently found (not Eva's). It had photos of the train platforms at a concentration camp along with photos of the same Nazis on a holiday/vacation trip. I believe the show revolved mostly around discovering if one photo was of a doctor that divided people on the platforms for work or death.

totally convinced that they were doing the right thing for Germany. Like our teabaggers, corporations, rethugs and many churches they had totally justified their ideology without asking any questions. This is what is scary about the pictures and about today.
