My Dad told me this story many years ago.
About this farmer that lived outside of town, in the country. But he had a farm on the other side of town and he would haul manure through the middle of town, with his horses and wagon, to put on his garden.
One day, during a hot campaign for county sheriff, the honey wagon was going through town just as one of the favorite candidates was heading into the court house.
Several of the candidate's supporters suggested he get up in the back of the "honey wagon" and give a speech to the people.
"Get up there, Homer!", they said.
So Homer climbed up on the back of the wagon, and the smells were wafting to the tree tops, and he looked around at the crowd to survey the atmosphere and started his speech:
"You know, I've given a lot of speeches during this campaign, but I want you all to know. This is the first time I have ever given a speech on a Republican platform".
