1. And recapitulating back to Schiller and James O'Keefe, why is this news?

1. He spoke truth to power, and
2. He was leaving anyway. I've taken liberties with opinions in past jobs when I know they can't fire me.

2. Some interesting constitutional questions, though.

What sort of proof did the founders envision would be sufficient to satisfy the age and citizenship requirements of the office? It was written back in the day when vital records out in the rural and frontier areas were not as commonplace as they are today.

And how much authority do the states have to formally establish the standards of such proof on their own?

I'm not too worried about the President's eligibility to appear on the ballot, inasmuch as Hawaii has issued him a certificate of live birth which reciprocity among the states would insist be honored everywhere for all official purposes.

If he is his party's nominee, that is.

5. Here's my suggestion

Make a formal little ceremony about it.

Each political party should have a committee to establish eligibility for each person running for president. Parties have committees for everything.

Then on nominating night of the convention, right before the candidate is nominated there's a committee report where some delegate comes on stage and says the eligibility committee has met and formally determined the eligibility of candidate X to be nominated as President of the United States (wild floor demonstartion) , and please welcome this person who will formally nominate him to be the next President of the United States (more floor demonstrations). Then the birth certificate should be forwarded to the Federal Elections Commissioner or someone formal.

I am not worried about President Obama either. I doubt his mom was savvy enough to fake newspaper announcements of his birth just in case the baby may someday be running for president.

Still, if there's a Constitutional requirement that a pertson is 35 and a naturalized citizen, then there needs to be some formal way to prove that he/she is.

3. why not just say

"we know you're a bunch of whining racist babies, but it's a good idea to not put another president through this so we'll support the bill." Seems like that would throw the birthers off balance and remove any questions other people have about why Obama and the dems are putting up a fight. The questions are starting to be asked in places other than fox and I'd guess it's only going to get worse.

I realize there's a need to make sure there's a quick and legitimate process for verifying eligibility and not just some ass saying "I don't believe that birth certificate is real" followed by 6 months of court cases. But is seems like with only 50 states there has to be a way to set up a process for quick resolution of any issues. Maybe do the verification at the federal level so candidates don't need to redo it 50 times.

Is there a reason future candidates should not need to show they are eligible? Is there a reason Obama can't just show the states what he's already released to everyone?

Anything Birther related helps the Dems and hurts the Repubs. Let them pass stupid laws, then they'll look like idiots when Obama mails the copy of his Birth Certificate to that state. They'll also look like the racists they are when it is pointed out that one of their own white candidates doesn't have a birth certificate, they'll say, well he's obviously an American, (Why, because he's white?)
