Bus driver loses job after flattening snowman
Bus driver loses job after flattening snowman
December 13, 2010 12:43 PM |

A bus driver in Champaign-Urbana has quit after officials with the transit agency saw an online video of the driver running over a snowman in the middle of a street.

The video is posted on YouTube. It shows the bus veering toward the snowman on the University of Illinois campus and running over it.
The video was posted after a snowstorm earlier this month and shows only one other vehicle on the street at the time. That car steered around the snowman moments before the bus hit it. It isn't clear who built the snowman or shot the video.

Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District spokeswoman Jan Kijowski said the driver has resigned. She refused to identify the driver or discuss the resignation

1. Resigned after clearing an obstacle to navigation
What? The snowman was by Rodin? I don't think so.

2. It is a snowman not a human life. AND whoever built the snowman in the middle of the road
should be cited for causeing a blockage of traffic. WHO is the Brilliant person that builds a snowman in the middle of the road?

5. Maybe they wanted to see who would take it out.
Maybe that was the point....

6. The video kind of suggests that, IMHO. Why he would resign is

quite puzzling. It looks like it would have been much safer if he'd maneuvered around it, though.

Edit: Watched again; he couldn't have steered around it.

4. Had he been fired, I'd be upset--but he resigned. Video here

His problem--not Justice's.

8. Unless the conversation went
"Resign and we give you a letter or recommendation or we fire you." I don't see any other reason for him to resign. Was he traumatized by killing the snowman?

9. Check the video - he hit it going about 20 mph
What if it was a pile of cinderblocks with snow on it? Would have broken the bus and put the passengers in danger. He swerved into the oncoming lane in order to hit it. He was very reckless.

10. Judging from the video, cars driving around the snowman would be in the wrong lane
and a danger to oncoming vehicles coming down the snowy hill.
It also looks like the bus saw the car have to drive around the snowman, so took out an obstacle.
I don't see the problem, myself.

but then, bus drivers in SF mowing down pedestrians is pretty common, I have yet to read of them losing their jobs.
