Update:
UFO Files Missing from UK Government Archives in U.S.-Related Incident

In releasing 8,000 previously classified documents on UFO sightings, the British government has admitted that files on the Rendlesham Forest Incident have disappeared.

In late December 1980, dozens of members of the U.S. Air Force stationed at a United Kingdom air base (RAF Woodbridge in Suffolk) reported seeing strange lights in the nearby trees. A patrol found marks on the ground and damage to vegetation, which led UFO researchers to label the event a classic example of a “close encounter” with extraterrestrials. Others have speculated that an unauthorized aircraft entered UK airspace and quickly left, while others fall back on the skeptics’ view: active imaginations.

British officials say the Rendlesham files may have gone missing as far back as 2000, when a request from the Ministry of Defense to see the information revealed a “huge” gap in the UFO records.

3. Interesting. Appears to confirm strenuous cover-up.

From interview with Staff Sergeant Penniston 16 years later:

... “After that incident, however, I was directed to report to OSI at 0900 in the morning. I met with a couple of agents, whom I had known because they had an office on the base. They debriefed me for about an hour and a half about the incident. It was an oral debriefing where I basically just told them what had happened, and they seemed quite content with the information that I provided them at the time. They seemed to have no problem with the fact that I had seen a craft. And, of course, there was no evidence, hard evidence, or so they thought. I did not tell them at this point that I had approached the craft, touched the craft, but I did tell them about the photos I had taken. But all this was, in their minds, I think, another unconfirmed UFO sighting, though the term `UFO’ was not used — by them or me. I think they felt assured at this point that containment was going to be maintained and that there was not going to be a problem. Damage control was at a minimum, and I think they felt that at that point they had met their objective.

“During the first week in January, about a week or so later, we had a pass-on that was given at guard mount to brief our people to ignore any type of activity that was going to be happening on the perimeter of Woodbridge. Apparently, or at least as we were told, there was a special team that was going to be out there doing some electronics work. They weren’t wearing uniforms but civilian clothes. Now it was perfectly normal to receive pass-ons, but this situation was different because these guys weren’t wearing military uniforms. It was later rumored that it was a U.S. team sent in as a containment study team. But I do not know that for a fact.

“In the meantime, Lt. Col. Halt issued his memorandum to the British Ministry of Defense. I do not find it odd that he didn’t get any response, for the simple reason that there was no official way of reporting this kind of thing and so there was no official way for anyone to react to the upchanneling of information. And quite frankly, I don’t think anyone suspected or expected the deputy base commander to shoot off a memo to MoD+. I think OSI thought the information was contained, because no written report had been taken up through U.S. channels and the debriefings were all taken care of.” ... - http://rendlesham-incident.co.uk/evidence/witness-interviews/salley-rayl-interviews-jim-penniston-1997/

2. It must suck to be an alien

You come all the way across the galaxy in your advanced space ship, and your grand plan to impress the inhabitants of a remote planet is foiled by bumbling bureaucrats hiding a file.

4. yawn...and still not one single shred of evidence
60+ years and still all we have are anecdotal stories and accusations of massive worldwide coverups. Wikileaks cn expose all sorts of government secrets, and yet still nothing on this.

5. Please explain, in detail, exactly *how* Wikileaks, or anyone else
could expose a "government secret(s)" when there are no files to begin with. You did read the part where they said the files were missing, right?

Thanks in advance...

6. you really think that govenments world wide could keep such a secret for this long?
Where is the EVIDENCE. You know, something tangible. Something that can withstand serious independent scrutiny. You really think that aliens are traveling all over the world, and yet we still can't come up with something solid. Come on, I would love to believe this stuff, but I have yet to see anything that would convince me beyond a shadow of a doubt.

7. Obviously they can, hence the missing files...
"It never happened, we have no record of it".... It's not so much about keeping it *secret*, as you can see one of the witnesses is speaking out about it, it's about keeping plausible deniability over the incident. Of course, the guy speaking out is going to be labeled a kook, nutjob, whatever, and the government will still deny the story. Those are exactly the tactics used to keep others from speaking out, as well.

9. Where is the independent proof?
If these things are flying through our skies, surely there would be independent proof. Besides, we can't even keep closely guarded nuclear secrets completely secret.

10. I once was as pigheaded about denial as you
Because I never saw one

Then I saw one

It was real

Demand all the steenkin 'proof' you want

But you'll never let yourself know until you see with your own eyes

That's the way it is - no phoney baloney

11. Really...personal insult just because I want proof?
Sorry, I need more than eyewitness anecdotes. Eyewitness testimony has routinely been shown to be very unreliable. There are people who swear they've seen the Jersey Devil and dinosaurs in the Congo - should we simply take their word without any proof?

8. There have been several government memos obtained...

that strongly suggest the reality of UFO activity. The 1947 Gen. Twining Memo is a good example.

"The phenomenon is something real and not visionary or fictitious."

Can't find the source however. Could be fake.
