PFC Manning Stripped Naked Again

PFC Manning was forced to strip naked in his cell again last night. As with the previous evening, Quantico Brig guards required him to surrender all of his clothing. PFC Manning then walked back to his bed, and spent the next seven hours in humiliation.

The decision to require him to be stripped of all clothing was made by the Brig commander, Chief Warrant Officer-2 Denise Barnes. According to First Lieutenant Brian Villard, a Marine spokesman, the decision was "not punitive" and done in accordance with Brig rules. There can be no conceivable justification for requiring a soldier to surrender all his clothing, remain naked in his cell for seven hours, and then stand at attention the subsequent morning. This treatment is even more degrading considering that PFC Manning is being monitored -- both by direct observation and by video -- at all times. The defense was informed by Brig officials that the decision to strip PFC Manning of all his clothing was made without consulting any of the Brig's mental health providers.

On Wednesday, the government filed its response to the defense's Article 138 complaint concerning PFC Manning's confinement conditions. The preliminary decision made by the government was to deny PFC Manning's request to be removed from Maximum custody and from Prevention of Injury (POI) watch. The defense now has ten days to file a rebuttal to this determination. After submitting the rebuttal, the matter will go back to the Quantico Base Commander, Colonel Daniel J. Choike, for his review. Once complete, he will forward the report to the Secretary of the Navy for final review.

which is in the SW district of Az Zawiyah and only a few hundred meters from a main highway intersection. A battle near there for a few hours in no way indicates that the whole city has fallen.

Libyan medical teams have told Amnesty International how they came under fire from pro-Gaddafi security forces yesterday while carrying out their work.

Two medics from the Libyan Red Crescent trying to retrieve a body near the town of Misratah were injured by shooting from a nearby military installation belonging to the Hamza Brigade, a military force loyal to Colonel al-Gaddafi.

"This was a deliberate attack on medical professionals, who were wearing full medical uniform and arrived in two clearly marked Red Crescent ambulances," said Malcolm Smart, Amnesty International's Middle East and North Africa director.

"This disturbing assault indicates that pro-Gaddafi forces are prepared to use lethal force indiscriminately even against those whose role it is to care for the wounded and pick up the dead."

Getting some very, very critical news from the central region. Trying to confirm now.

We reported early (first or second day of the revolution) that #Gaddafi distributed weapons in Sirt, saying "you'll need them soon".

We also reported that elements of the Furjan tribe have joined the revolution, esp. in Tarhuna.

For a little background, the Furjan tribe have a presence in Tarhuna, Sirt, and Ajdabia.

It seems that today in Ras Lanuf's action, some Furjan soldiers under #Gaddafi refused to comply.

When revolutionaries entered the Ras Lanuf army camp, they found 20+ bodies of soldiers with their hands tied behind their back.

It appears now that these were soldiers who refused to comply, many of them Furjan.

It's also revealed that in Sirt, #Gaddafi did not in fact distribute weapons to the entire population, not even to his entire tribe.

It appears he only distributed weapons to his own branch of the #Gaddafi's, showing he doesn't even trust his own tribe entirely. #Libya

Now it appears that Sirt has been ready for revolt, but the presence of the Saadi brigade prevented that.

With Furjan soldiers slaying, a significant population of Sirt appears ready to join the revolution as it approaches. #Libya


The humiliating defeat of the Saadi brigade today in Ras Lanuf also helps increase probability of uprising in Sirt.

Previously, there were voices calling to completely avoid attacking Sirt, afraid that a bloody tribal battle will ensue

But with these new revelations, it seems that an approach by revolutionary forces towards Sirt may tip the city over to the uprising.

This is significant because revolutionary forces are reported to be within 150 kms from Sirt right now. #Libya

This particular piece of news was revealed by an Aljazeera guest earlier who is a member of the national council

I need to explain something about the tribal makeup of Libyan society. I must make it clear that all consider themselves one nation.

A "tribe" here is simply a unit of social organization, not a "nation within a nation" diverting allegiance away from #Libya.

Hence in much of the Arab world, you belong to a family, which belongs to a clan, to a tribe, to a nation.

20:52 BREAKING from Al Manara Media: Reports have come to Al Manara Media that the battalion responsible for the attacks in Ras Lanuf today is a security battalion known as the Saadi Tabouli battlion whose headquarters are 20km south of the city of Sirt and that the battalion had fled after losing the battle to the headquarters of the Reconnaissance Battalion in the city of Sirt. Before withdrawing, the battlion killed 20 young men who refused orders to shoot at the protesters. It is thought that these young men are from the tribe of Forjan who were brought from a military training centre and used as human shields.
