Former Mubarak ally tipped as Arab League secretary general
Mustafa El-Fekki expected to replace Amr Moussa
Ahram Online, Friday 4 Mar 2011

Egypt is expected to field Mustafa Fekki as the replacement for Amr Moussa, after Moussa's stint as Secretary-General to the Arab League ends in mid-May.

A high-ranked diplomatic source told Ahram Online that Egypt will withdraw Mofeed Shehab, former Minister of State for Legal Affairs and Parliamentary Councils, as a candidate, and present several candidates for the position, with Fekki , former member of the Shura Council, former member of the NDP and political adviser to former president Hosni Mubarak topping the list.

A report by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs which was sent to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, said that many members of the Arab League requested Shehab be replaced with another candidate since he was seen as an integral part of the old regime.

The report said that there is a “silent and unspoken rejection” of Shehab’s candidacy and stressed the importance of replacing him with a candidate that will be accepted both by Arab countries and the public.

LIBYA: REPORTERS BLOCKED IN HOTEL AS PROTESTS ARE EXPECTED

11:02 04 MAR 2011

(AGI) Tripoli- Libyan authorities have blocked foreign journalists in a Tripoli hotel to prevent reports on the protests. The protests are expected to occur after Friday's prayers. Around 130 journalists are being kept within the Rixos hotel; though invited by the Libyan government their movements are strictly monitored. A group of reporters, including those from Reuters, was stopped by guards when it tried to exit the building located south of Tripoli's center.

Qaddafi Will be Killed by Sons, Relatives, Echorouk Says
By Massoud A. Derhally - Mar 4, 2011 11:46 AM GMT+0200

Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi will be killed either by one of his sons, relatives or officers, Echorouk reported, citing Libya’s deputy director of ‭military intelligence and commander of the Libyan Republican Guard.

Qaddafi will fall “very soon,” the Algerian newspaper reported, citing Suleiman Mahmoud Suleiman, who said he was siding with Libyans who started a revolt against Qaddafi in mid February and was no longer supporting him.

The Libyan leader had become “insane,” Suleiman told he newspaper. “There is no leader in the history of revolutionaries that tried to be king and sought titles for himself other than Qaddafi, when he claimed he was the king of kings of Africa,” he said. “That’s when I realized he was mad and also earlier when he began to take steps to pass on power to his son.”

Oprah 'to host show in Cairo's Tahrir Square'

– 1 hr 49 mins ago
CAIRO (AFP) – US television talk show star Oprah Winfrey is to host a live show from Cairo's Tahrir Square, the epicentre of a revolution that ousted Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, a report said Friday.

Egypt's new tourism minister Munir Fakhri Abdelnur was quoted by the state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper as saying Winfrey had accepted an invitation "without hesitation."

"The plan is for her to broadcast a live show from Tahrir Square on a Friday in March, but the date has not been finalised," the mass-circulation paper said.

It was part of a campaign to revive tourism in Egypt after the huge uprising that forced Mubarak to resign on February 11 after 30 years in power, the paper said.

Western powers should keep out of the Arab revolutions, says Stop the War's Lindsey German, interviewed on Russia Toady TV. The Arab peoples can liberate themselves and any intervention be the West, who just weeks ago were supplying Arab dictators with arms and aid, would just be seen as another round of the colonialism which has blighted the whole region for over 100 years.

Terror Quiets Libya Capital as Friday Prayers Approach

By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK
Published: March 4, 2011

TRIPOLI, Libya — Libyan authorities sought on Friday to lock down parts of the capital to prevent further street protests but foes of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi said they planned to display their opposition from inside the city’s mosques, staging sit-ins after the noon prayers that have become a flashpoint for demonstrations across the Arab world.

Witnesses in some restive neighborhoods of Tripoli said roadblocks backed by armored vehicles and tanks had been set up while official minders ordered foreign journalists not to leave the hotel where they have been told to stay by the authorities.

The government’s measures came against the backdrop of a state of terror that has seized two working-class neighborhoods here that just a week ago exploded in revolt. Residents on Thursday reported constant surveillance, searches of cars and even cellphones by militiamen with Kalashnikovs at block-by-block checkpoints and a rash of disappearances of those involved in last week’s protest.

<snip>

Worshippers said rebel leaders in Benghazi, the eastern stronghold of the uprising, had sent word urging protesters to remain inside mosques for sit-ins after noon prayers. “Benghazi is telling this to all the citizens in Libya,” said one worshipper who spoke in return for anonymity for fear of violent reprisals. “Our government is in Benghazi now for all of Libya.”

Egyptian revolutionary supporting Libyan revolution | @Speak2tweet

AUDIO in Arabic

Peace be with you. To the great Libyan people, you have offered your blood and much more. Know that Gaddafi and his son have turned Libya to a great battleground, so prepare your strength for them. They have some supporters, and mercenaries and weapons, and you have to arm yourself, after your faith in God, with what you can find, however simple. Keep the weapons you find and use them against these madmen, who want to kill the whole population to keep their power, and for a might they claim, which is false. Whoever is able to, should pick up a weapon. They are preparing to attack you, and you are unarmed and don’t have the weapons they have. So I say whoever can pick up a weapon needs to do so, because they want to take their revenge. This is the unjust ruler, who wants to take his revenge on those he rules, because a word of truth said in the face of a tyrant. I tell you, keep all the weapons you get from any army bases or from the battleground, you will need them. May God make you victorious, God is great and may Libya live free and secure and may tyranny die. I am an Egyptian brother, I know the meaning of revolution and challenge in the face of injustice.
