White House proposes cuts in low-income senior jobs; clean water funding; disaster preparedness

Yay.

===

WASHINGTON – Their opening volleys behind them, the White House and tea party-backed Republicans in Congress still face a gaping disagreement over how much to immediately cut from domestic programs over the next six months as a down payment on out-of-control budget deficits.

Only two weeks remain before a stopgap funding bill runs out, but neither side seems in a hurry to move off of its position in any significant way — at least yet...

In fact, the administration's latest $6.5 billion spending cut proposal contains lots of easy targets, like cutting accounts lawmakers have heavily "earmarked" with back-home projects like clean water funding, eliminating $500 million in grants to state and local police departments and $425 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency money for state and local governments for homeland security and disaster preparedness.

The White House list also would cut $280 million for a new rail tunnel under the Hudson River that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has canceled, $275 million cut from a program subsidizing community service jobs for low-income senior citizens and $500 million in rescissions of unneeded money from a program providing food aid to low-income pregnant women and children under the age of 5.

2. Buying the fake Republican narrative all the way! Why not do what people want...
...tax millionaires, get rid of corporate subsidies, end the wars, close some bases or otherwise cut military spending?

Really, why in the hell bother with two parties when one doesn't stand for anything?

4. They are both owned by the same, not much difference. Money talks and
has power, the rest of us just talk. Elections, not to worry, the monied will get into office whom they want. ... the country really has little to do with people anymore. People are expendable, money is not, so we should all be prepared to give our lives for money.

10. It's so totally fucked up it might have to fail before it gets better. I still think

the majority of Americans are asleep at the wheel. Maybe the country needed another 8 years of a Bush type to wake up. I would have thought 8 years would have done it, I guess not.

Major steps would be 1.) get the money out of elections; 2.) return to decent MSM; and 3.) dump the Citizens United decision.

That said, I have no idea how that's going to happen, because too many Americans are focused on trivia, which is part of the plan to keep Americans dumbed down as civil rights are eroded, wages move to among the lowest in the world, public services become meager and a fascist oligarchy government of sorts is fully installed.

Exactly, "What a fucked up country we've become!"

In corps. I used to get my resume on the street, when it's the country it's not that easy.

11. What's next, creating debtors prisons and orphanages to save money?
Nah - we couldn't possibly ask the rich to pay their fair share. Welcome to our Dickensian future.
