Sac City Unified proposes cutting extracurricular programs
SACRAMENTO, CA - Trustees of the Sacramento City Unified School District will be considering harsh measures to deal with a worst-case $22.35 million budget deficit at Thursday night's board meeting.
On the table is cutting what is called extra pay for extra duty stipends for extracurricular activities such as sports, marching band, drama, yearbook and newspaper, cheerleading, and speech and debate, said district spokeswoman Janet Weeks. Co-curricular transportation funds may also be axed.
In addition, teacher layoffs, increased class sizes of two grades in K-3, a reduction of counseling staff by 37 percent, and the elimination of one assistant principal position at each high school, could be decided, Weeks said.
Trustees must submit a balanced budget to the Sacramento County office of Education by March 15.
