Houston man who spent 30 years in prison formally cleared

A Houston man who served 30 years of a 75-year sentence for a Dallas rape-robbery he did not commit has been formally cleared of the crime by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.

The court's Wednesday action endorsed a Dallas judge's January determination, based on DNA testing, that Cornelius Dupree, 51, was innocent of the 1979 crime.

While incarcerated, Dupree on three occasions made unsuccessful pleas to the state court. He twice was bypassed for parole because he refused to admit his guilt, said Paul Cates, spokesman for the Innocence Project, the New York-based group that obtained Dupree's DNA testing.

Results of the test came back last summer, just days after Dupree was released on parole.

"Everything I do is pretty much for the first time," Dupree said today. "I just take it one day at a time. I kind of prepared myself for things being different because I'm different and I know the world is different."

4. It would be interesting to see a study on the race breakdown for the wrongly convicted.
I'm guessing I wouldn't be surprised by the outcome, but all I have is anecdotal evidence from what I have seen in the news. It would be good to see the number broken down.

5. I also want to see the data, but I suspect I'll not be all that happy with the results.
