Niehaus ripped for removing Seitz
1:17 pm, Mar 2, 2011 | Written by jcraig

Cincinnnati Fire Department Lt. Mark Sanders, president of the Ohio Association of Professional Firefighters, ripped Senate President Tom Niehaus of New Richmond today for abruptly removing Sen. Bill Seitz of Green Township from a committee that narrowly approved Senate Bill 5 this morning, by a 7-5 vote.

Another Republican, Sen. Scott Oelslager of North Canton, was removed from the Senate Rules Committee to avoid a split vote and get the bill to the 33-member Senate floor this afternoon. Seitz and Oelslager have voiced opposition to the bill.

“That’s my senator,” Sanders said of Seitz. “He represents my area. I don’t have that voice anymore. What kind of democracy do we have? I think the Senate has forgotten Ohioans today.”

“We’re going to leave no stone unturned,” Sanders said of recourse should the full Senate pass the legislation that guts the state’s 27-year-old collective bargaining law.

Sanders, who represents nearly 20,000 firefighters statewide and about 800 in Cincinnati, said opponents of Senate Bill 5 could seek a statewide ballot issue in November to repeal all or part of the legislation — assuming it becomes law.

Unbelievable!

more:

Seitz kicked off committee
As has been rumored for a few days, Senate President Tom Niehaus yanked Sen. Bill Seitz off of the Commerce, Insurance and Labor Committee prior to today's vote on Senate Bill 5.

Seitz, R-Cincinnati, has been an outspoken opponent not only of the content of the bill, which he says gives too much leverage to government employers, and of the process, which he said created an unnecessarily confrontational atmosphere.

Seitz was replaced by Sen. Cliff Hite, R-Findlay, a bill supporter who said he enjoyed a good, rigorous debate.

3. Precisely
Which is why Obama's continuing thrust to seek bipartisanship with the GOP is a surrender to them.

You cant deal with ruthless tyrants, it only shows weakness as far as they're concerned.

7. I think the repugs
didn't follow the rules regarding kicking senators off committees.

But of course King John says: "Don't worry___________. Just do what you want to do."

This isn't a democracy anymore.

And if you don't get on the bus, King John will commit vehicular manslaughter!!!

11. Sent this to TPM when it came out, now Josh has it up:
Ohio GOP Advances Anti-Union Bill After Last Minute Committee Shuffle

It took the removal of two -- count 'em -- union-sympathetic Republicans from Ohio state Senate committees, but supporters of Gov. John Kasich's (R) plan to limit collective bargaining rights for state workers were able to move their plan one step closer to Kasich's desk today.

By a vote of 7-5, a State Senate Committee charged with reviewing the collective bargaining proposal -- known as Senate Bill 5 -- moved the bill toward a floor reading and its expected passage. Shortly after that, a similarly close vote moved the bill out of the Senate Rules Committee.

The bill is now on the Senate floor and passage is expected imminently. But opponents of the law say the pathway to today's vote shows how hard a sell Kasich's plan is to the broad swath of voters in the Buckeye state.

Indeed, the narrow committee victories for supporters of the plan came with some awfully bad optics. In order to ensure a vote that would go Kasich's way, the leader of the GOP-controlled state Senate removed Sen. Bill Seitz (R) from the Insurance and Labor Committee and Sen. Scott Oelslager (R) from the Rules Committee. Both Republicans are opposed to Kasich's collective bargaining plan, and their votes against it would have deadlocked their respective committees, thus keeping the bill from moving ahead.
