Obama Puts Public Option And Single Payer Back On The Table

www.consumerwatchdog.org/blog/obama-puts-public-option-and-s...

(THE ABOVE LINK DOESN'T WORK. PLEASE SEE REPLY #5 FOR THE CORRECT LINK THAT DOES WORK).

"At the National Governors Association, President Obama just threw his weight behind a bi-partisan effort in the US Senate to allow states to innovate with health reform, including adopting a public insurance system or single payer health care system by 2013 instead of 2017."

6. I believe this is part of a "bipartisan" proposal to push up timetable for states to opt out
I'm not totally up on all the details, but there's an amendmant being pushed that will move up the timetable when states can opt out of parts of the affordable care act. To do that they must show that they can provide better care for their citizens that the federal affordable care act - this would include state run single payer. This would be great for progressive states, not so much so for those of us stuck in red states.

10. Could this help some red states to vote blue in the future, especially
if the single payer system goes through, and the people finally begin
to see how the health insurance companies have been lying to and
robbing us for all those years?

13. That's pretty much it in a nutshell from what I saw yesterday
In the short term it would open the door for progressive states to implement single payer systems. So long as they meet the National requirements of coverage. This is actually not a bad idea overall. Sure, we in red states won't get the whole package right away. However, if other states set an example of working, effective single payer systems, it's going to be hard to convince voters in other states that it's not a good thing.

21. When the red states see how well the blue states are doing with
the single payer system, some of the red-state people will begin to see
how the health care insurance companies have been lying to and robbing
the American people all these decades. They might very well vote liberal
the next time. But, it will take years before this happens. It's still
some time in the future.

26. I agree.
It's good to see the possibility of moving the date up. The sooner states can implement this the better for everyone. Even those of us in states that are hostile to the concept of single payer.

16. It was already in the bill...
Too bad you missed it... it was discussed here at great length.

I hope states do indeed get to do this sooner than the original 2017 date.

I really, most sincerely, do not get how so many people either never got this, never understood the bill, or have forgotten. Threads upon threads upon threads for months and months this was discussed.

Kinda scary.

all the threads. There just isn't enough time. Also, I pick and choose
what news to read -- and like most people, I can't help but miss out a lot
in the process

It was never meant to be the be all and end all. Now, it's up to us. Start organizing.

30. Yes, the liberals will have to start organizing and working hard, and not
Edited on Wed Mar-02-11 09:44 AM by Cal33
be too lackadaisical.

I have always been aware of how hard-working and persistent the conservatives
have always been. That's how they have been so successful -- in spite of the
fact that they have to invent lies non-stop, in order to fool the public about
everything that they do.

Liberals have only to tell the truth. Their job is much easier. But liberals
apparently don't like to work hard. And they are neither persistent nor
organized -- that's for sure! Example: The discredited electronic voting machines
are still around. It's only been 10 years since Al Gore. Some one-third of the
states are still using them, even today -- including some blue states.

If the situation had been reversed, you can bet your bottom dollar that the
conservatives would have raised a big stink to high heaven from DAY ONE. They
wouldn't have allowed the liberals to get away with anything.

I feel that the conservatives have never yet won a national election honestly -- if
the liberals had not allowed them to get away with it.

Come on Liberals. Get organized. And be hard-working, PERSISTENTLY! We've got a
lot to learn from the conservatives!
