The whimsy and menace of Moamer Kadhafi

Libyan leader Moamar Kadhafi (L), flanked by his bodyguards in 2004. With his exotic dress sense, all-girl squad of bodyguards and often whimsical aphorisms, Kadhafi has been an enigma of the North African desert for more than 40 years.

...

"Shakespeare, the great playwright of Arab origin," he proclaims, explaining that of course the writer must have been an Arab, with a name like Sheikh Zubayr.

...

The Britain-trained officer and author of the "Green Book" on his "third universal theory" has seen parallels between himself and both Jesus Christ and the Prophet Mohammed, who he said were "unaware of the universal renown that awaited them."

...

In Paris, on a 2007 visit, he pitched his heated, 200 square metre (2,150 square foot) tent in the garden of the Hotel Marigny, the official government guesthouse.

...

Kadhafi's allies have also been targets of his wit. In Algiers in 2005, he labelled Palestinians "idiots," provoking laughter not only from Arab leaders but even from Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas.

Tunisia reaches out to citizens with Facebook
28 February 2011 | 07:18:00 AM | Source: Reuters

Tunisia's Interior Ministry, long feared as an instrument of repression, is hoping a new Facebook page will help it thaw relations with its citizens.

The move marks an about-face for the organisation, which tried to stamp out social networking during the uprising last month that forced President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali to step down and sent shockwaves through the Arab world.

"We want to create a new way to communicate with Tunisians, that provides total transparency and instant information," a spokesman for the ministry said Friday.

Saudi king offers more permanent state jobs for Saudis
Sunday, 27 February 2011

RIYADH (Reuters, Al Arabiya)
Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah has ordered that state employees on temporary labor contracts be given permanent jobs, in another apparent bid to insulate the kingdom from a wave of protests in the Arab world.

The top oil exporter has so far escaped major protests against poverty, corruption and oppression that have spread through the region, toppling entrenched leaders in Egypt and Tunisia and reaching neighbors Bahrain and Oman.
King Abdullah returned home on Wednesday from three months of medical treatment abroad for back treatment and unveiled benefits for Saudis worth around $36 billion to address social pressures such as unemployment and housing.

On Sunday, the king also ordered all Saudi nationals in temporary public sector jobs be given permanent employment, state news agency SPA said.

25. Yeah, easy enough when they really start to feel the heat...
but they are so insanely greedy the people have to put the fear of God in 'em first. Look at Gaddafi frantically offering payouts to every family in Libya, except that it's too late and they aren't buying. Wonder when our own homegrown greedheads crying poor and groaning about the deficit (which THEY created!) will feel desperate enough to start offering us peons a few crumbs? I think they literally have to fear for their lives before it comes to that.

New shocking video of Bahrain Army shooting protesters with automatic guns

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMRlx0IdrGE

Last Friday, at least 50 people have been injured as security forces in Bahrain opened fire on protesters for a second straight day. Protesters who tried to march to the square on Friday described a chaotic scene of tear gas clouds, bullets coming from many directions and people slipping in pools of blood as they sought cover. Some claimed the gunfire came from either helicopters or sniper nests. The video shot by RT crew shows chanting protesters marching towards military vehicles before sustained gunfire erupts. Throngs of anti-government protesters took over the square earlier in the week, setting up a camp with tents and placards, but they were driven out by riot police in a deadly assault on Thursday that killed five people and injured more than 200.

35. A dutch report from the city of Benghazi
By correspondent Kees Broere in Benghazi, Libya

Between ' more ' and ' not '. So, I think, you can vote in Benghazi, Libya's second city, currently best describe. The city was liberated from the regime of Colonel Gaddafi, that is a fact. But because it is not for the whole of Libya, feel the protesters here their freedom so far as half a victory.

Tripoli is the capital and thus for the insurgents against Gaddafi also the main prize. On posters here in the city is that there are several ways to read. 'Libië is one, Tripoli is our capital ' stood there on one to read. And a second Lampoon left it at an even nicer way know: 'Libië is one body, Tripoli is the heart '.

Personal interest
That heart is as yet not welcome. The people in Benghazi bring a lot of time to discussions on the question of how that might. They hope, so they make it clear to our reporters, that the spark from the East will skip to the capital in the West of the country. But that wish also reality, that turns out to be a lot trickier.

Not surprising of course. Tripoli is best protected. More than in Benghazi sit there also people who have direct personal interests to Colonel Gaddafi provisionally in the saddle. As long as they have their own interests have not otherwise safe, they will not drop their leader, but armed aggression on its territory and, if necessary, defend with brute force.

All or nothing
Also in Tunisia and Egypt gold that the leaders, who just ' President ' were called, were dependent on the support of their confidants. But unlike in Libya could confidants their leader lose weight, without this also meant their own demise. Many went almost unnoticed in the ' system ', that was not aborted.

In Libya, so make in any case, the people in Benghazi abundantly clear, there is no system to after the departure of the leader. For many people to Gaddafi back could mean that they now feel an all-or-nothing game to play. It is a thought that the ordinary citizen can reassure anything but

The king of Saudi Arabia wants to buy Facebook for $ 150 billion
Posted by Yasmin February 27, 2011 at 15:37

Facebook has been a great help to the revolution but it is a goldmine for the popular social network. Indeed, King Abdullah of Saudi advised by Goldman Sachs has decided to offer $ 150 billion to purchase Facebook.

According Dawnwires , sources with the Saudi kingdom have reported that the king was very angry against Mark Zuckenberg because he left the revolution become out of control as he promised during a meeting with the king, not authorize the creation of more pages revolutionaries. Unfulfilled promise, of course, since such pages are created and circulated daily, and especially these days for Libya.

The contract will be paid in cash, reports Dawnwires. Goldman Sachs, to persuade King Abdullah, made a presentation during which he outlined the benefits of Facebook for the kingdom that could never establish its position with no risk of revolt. Goldman Sachs has even more interest to raise the estimate of the social network that has invested $ 450 million in the latter a value of the famous company estimated at 50 billion.

Mass arrests stopped further Djibouti protests

Djibouti protests this week have mostly been abroad, like this event in Ottawa, Canada

© Kulanka/afrol News
afrol News, 27 February - The planned resumption of mass protests in Djibouti this weekend was hindered by massive police presence in the capital and arrests of about 300 opposition and civil society leaders.

Friday 18 February saw an estimated 30,000 Djiboutians protesting in central Djibouti City. Their main demand was for President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh to step down, or at least refrain from standing candidate in the upcoming April elections.

An estimated 25,000 Djiboutians protested against government on 18 February

A united Djiboutian opposition, supported by civil society and human rights groups, says President Guelleh's third term bid is unconstitutional. The regime only last year changed the constitution, removing the two-term limit, but this was done by a parliament without opposition members. The opposition boycotted the 2005 and 2008 polls as their demands for fair elections were not met.

The 18 February protest, following earlier student riots and spontaneous popular protests after earlier Friday prayers, was mainly organised by the Union for a Democratic Alternative (UAD) main opposition party. As darkness fell, the peaceful protest was violently dispersed by riot police, preventing the protesters from establishing a permanent protest camp in central Djibouti City.

Britain froze the assets of Muammar Gaddafi and his five children on Sunday evening at an emergency meeting of the Privy Council at Windsor castle presided over by the Queen.

The chancellor, George Osborne, acted amid reports that the Libyan leader had moved £3bn to Britain last week. In a separate cloak-and-dagger operation, £900m of Libyan currency was impounded in Britain.

Earlier ministers announced they had stripped the Gaddafi family of its diplomatic immunity in Britain.

A special meeting of the Privy Council at 5.15pm on Sunday approved an order in council freezing the assets of Gaddafi, his sons Saif al-Islam, Hannibal Muammar, Khamis Muammar, and Mutassim, and his daughter Aisha Muammar. The Times reported on Saturday that Gaddafi had deposited £3m with a Mayfair-based private wealth manager last week.
