Gynaecologists recommend abortion safer than having a baby
Edited on Sun Feb-27-11 11:23 AM by The Straight Story
PRO-life campaigners are outraged after doctors recommended advising pregnant women that abortion is safer than having the baby.

The draft guidance - drawn up by 18 senior gynaecologists, nurses and abortion providers from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists - recommended that women considering terminations be told that "abortion is generally safer than continuing pregnancy to term," the Sunday (London) Telegraph reported.

The guidance, which would be given to doctors, nurses and counsellors advising pregnant women, also says women must be told that most do not suffer any psychological harm following abortions.

1. They are outraged at...the truth? WTF?
Seems like fairly obvious logic that an induced miscarriage or a minor outpatient sort of surgery is going to be safer than a full-term pregnancy with all the possibilities that can go wrong there (placenta previa, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, etc). Not to mention the process of actually giving birth and all of its attendant risks. People used to die quite often in childbirth. It's gotten better, but I still remember reading a statistic (can't find it now of course) that says a pregnant woman faces a higher precentage possibility of death than a passenger who stepped onto the Titanic. Of course, they have to fudge a bit and assume the Titanic risk to have been average across all economic classes, which clearly it wasn't, but still.

Why can't we just trust women to make their own choices about their lives, health, and parenthood?

2. this is true as long as abortion is safe and legal.
if it is outlawed, all bets are off.

this is an interesting development, tho, because every pregnancy is a life threatening condition. most go through it fine, but even today women die. their bodies are changed forever. a man cannot, by law, be forced to donate a pint of blood. but they want to force women to risk their lives.
