5. He forgot something really important - the 15-20 ads for pee problems,
fibromyalgia, low platelets, the bathtub ads, just for men for that gray hair, constipation, diarrhea, pain pads, arthritis, type 2 diabetes, sleep issues, depression - all of which have 8 zillion warnings about how you just may die of you use them...or they may not work.

Important to mention because the time spent on these ads far outweighs the time Brian, Katie or whoever spend on the non-news.

12. Check the ads sometime on the evening news
How many are for products you can't buy? Prescription drugs, the wonder of extractive energy industries, the gee-whiz ability of financial advisors to suck money out of your pocket while you go broke. Almost make you wonder why they buy all that air time.

18. It's been almost twice as long as that for me. . .
Every once in awhile, I'll be at someone's house or a television in a public place will air the news, and all it takes is five minutes for me to remember all too vividly why I don't watch anymore. And especially the "local news." Last time I saw that, the lead article -- the freakin' lead article for the entire broadcast -- dealt with the theft of a laptop computer from Paris Hilton's home (or maybe it was Lindsay Lohan's, or some other vapid "celebrity").

I took a few moments that time to look up the local station manager's email address and shoot him a note to explain how pointless I found his product. He was so shook up over my criticism, and so concerned to get immediately to work fixing that gawdawful mess, he didn't have time to acknowledge receipt of my complaint, let alone tell me how he was going to fix it. Poor fellah.

And the national news is just as bad. For a short period two years ago, my wife and I watched Rachel Maddow's show. It was fresh, and original, and seemed to hold promise. But then it became impossible to watch, given how often she had Pat Buchanan on her show. We finally turned from it in disgust as well. And though I've been told she's cleaned up her show somewhat and got rid of the geriatric bigots that littered the set, I just really didn't see enough positive content to offset the possibility that nimrods like Buchanan might make an appearance again.

Guess I'll content myself with the printed word and the occasional YouTube post if I want to see video of some event or disaster. It's better than sitting around in any event, watching the disaster that is televised "news."

16. wouldn't you love to be in the room when Garry and Jane Pauley talk about stuff like this?
I'm sure she has plenty of stories from her days at NBC and elsewhere.
