"We have Plan A, Plan B, Plan C. Plan A is to live and die in Libya. Plan B is to live and die in Libya. Plan C is to live and die in Libya." - Saif Islam Qaddafi during interview

I called this Day 10 because the official kick off day was #Feb17 but the kickoff was 2 days early and today is in reality day 12.

Threads for previous days are in my journal

To make sure the Army doesn't swing the revolution to the people, with the silent complicity of world leaders more concerned about the stability of oil prices than people's lives, Qaddafi has brought in more than 35,000 North African mercenaries specifically from Chad, Nigeria, Guinea and Darfur. There's a Facebook video of a captured mercenary from Chad (Youtube here). Captured mercenaries confessed they were paid between $12,000 - $30,000 each. Today pamphlet ads were found in Nigeria offering them $2000/day for their savage work.

Is Qaddafi the only one paying these mercenaries? Or are EU governments, with their long history of hiring mercenaries, chipping in? I demand to know.

21. Why Bobbo, you sound as... vengeful as I do.
After watching all those videos, listening to all those calls, seeing all those pictures, hearing all those screams, I'm not quite sure what I wish him. I think, after seeing those underground prisons and reading how they pissed on the prisoners after torturing them, I think I want to see him tossed in a hole without food or water and left to die, buried alive, where no one can hear his screams.

Put the sons and criminals like Susseni in adjoining cells. They can comfort each other.

No, feed them a little, just long enough to drag it out. A slice of dry bread and dirty, foul water.

46. I freely admit it... "vengeful" describes what I feel about this monster.
As we have said, there is NOTHING that will do any justice to him.. NOTHING.

And this is a big reason why I don't subscribe to the idea of karma... it just doesn't equate.

However, as bad as he is, I don't know that it is much better for a country to not only let their poor people just die from ignoring them, but to put them in a position of having to take their own lives, which so many are doing now. It may not be as dramatic as anti-aircraft guns, but it is JUST AS EVIL!!!

Can someone invent a drug whereby G can be hallucinated through a death of one kind, then wake up, and hallucinated through another death?

I think I culd like that.. how is THAT for vengeful? Does that qualify? :evilgrin:

UN slaps sanctions on Libyan regime
Security Council unanimously institute sanctions on Libya, including travel bans and asset freezes on Libyan leader.
Last Modified: 27 Feb 2011 01:24 GMT

The UN Security Council has unanimously imposed travel bans and asset freezes on Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, members of his family and inner circle.

Saturday's resolution adopted by the 15-nation council also called for the immediate referral of the deadly crackdown against anti-government demonstrators in Libya to the International Criminal Court in The Hague for investigation and possible prosecution of anyone responsible for killing civilians.

The council demanded an "immediate end to the violence and for steps to address the legitimate demands of the population" in Libya.

It called for Libyan authorities to act "with restraint, respect human rights and international humanitarian law," and facilitate immediate access for international human rights monitors.

Sorry for the C&P but it's faster.

In the SC discussions the Rome Statute was often mentioned - it's merely a shorthand for the establishing treaty. Going straight to the source, the text of the Rome statute:
Prevent Genocide International
ROME STATUTE OF THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT
http://www.preventgenocide.org/law/icc/statute/part-a.htm#2

The part that matters most is Article 7:

Article 7: Crimes against humanity

1. For the purpose of this Statute, "crime against humanity" means any of the following acts when committed as part of a widespread or systematic attack directed against any civilian population, with knowledge of the attack:

(a) Murder;
(b) Extermination;
(c) Enslavement;
(d) Deportation or forcible transfer of population;
(e) Imprisonment or other severe deprivation of physical liberty in violation of fundamental rules of international law;
(f) Torture;
(g) Rape, sexual slavery, enforced prostitution, forced pregnancy, enforced sterilization, or any other form of sexual violence of comparable gravity;
(h) Persecution against any identifiable group or collectivity on political, racial, national, ethnic, cultural, religious, gender as defined in paragraph 3, or other grounds that are universally recognized as impermissible under international law, in connection with any act referred to in this paragraph or any crime within the jurisdiction of the Court;
(i) Enforced disappearance of persons;
(j) The crime of apartheid;
(k) Other inhumane acts of a similar character intentionally causing great suffering, or serious injury to body or to mental or physical health.

2. For the purpose of paragraph 1:

The Rome Statute Explanatory Memorandum states that crimes against humanity

are particularly odious offenses in that they constitute a serious attack on human dignity or grave humiliation or a degradation of one or more human beings. They are not isolated or sporadic events, but are part either of a government policy (although the perpetrators need not identify themselves with this policy) or of a wide practice of atrocities tolerated or condoned by a government or a de facto authority. However, murder, extermination, torture, rape, political, racial, or religious persecution and other inhumane acts reach the threshold of crimes against humanity only if they are part of a widespread or systematic practice. Isolated inhumane acts of this nature may constitute grave infringements of human rights, or depending on the circumstances, war crimes, but may fall short of meriting the stigma attaching to the category of crimes under discussion. On the other hand, an individual may be guilty of crimes against humanity even if he perpetrates one or two of the offences mentioned above, or engages in one such offense against only a few civilians, provided those offenses are part of a consistent pattern of misbehavior by a number of persons linked to that offender (for example, because they engage in armed action on the same side or because they are parties to a common plan or for any similar reason.) Consequently when one or more individuals are not accused of planning or carrying out a policy of inhumanity, but simply of perpetrating specific atrocities or vicious acts, in order to determine whether the necessary threshold is met one should use the following test: one ought to look at these atrocities or acts in their context and verify whether they may be regarded as part of an overall policy or a consistent pattern of an inhumanity, or whether they instead constitute isolated or sporadic acts of cruelty and wickedness.<1>

I think Col. G has most of those bases covered.

"The seven countries that voted against the treaty were Iraq, Israel, Libya, the People's Republic of China, Qatar, the United States, and Yemen.<5>"

As mentioned in the SC, it doesn't matter that Libya didn't sign.

Qaddafi, Bush and the Iraq Big Lie

While the US government expresses outrage over the brutality of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi toward his own people, we’re missing a complex but significant wrinkle that ties Qaddafi to America’s cover-up of the true path to war in Iraq.

In May, 2009, a man named Ibn Shaikh al-Libi supposedly committed suicide while being held in a Libyan jail. Al-Libi is a deeply, deeply interesting fellow. Back in 2002, he was tortured by Egypt under US direction. It appears that the reason the US government had him tortured was not to stop some imminent attack on the United States, but to generate alleged—and false— links between Al-Qaeda and Saddam Hussein that could justify invading Iraq.

Al-Libi was captured and sent to Egypt, where under severe torture including waterboarding, he related what turned out to be false information about purported Saddam-9/11 links. Al-Libi later explained that he provided that material because that’s what his captors wanted to hear, and it ended his torture.

Nick Baumann wrote about it in 2009 in Mother Jones:
    Al-Libi was the man whose false confession, obtained under torture, of a link between Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda provided the Bush administration with its casus belli for war with Iraq. It didn’t seem to matter that al-Libi’s claim that Bin Laden had sent operatives to be trained in the use of weapons of mass destruction by Hussein’s people didn’t make any sense. “They were killing me,” al-Libi later told the FBI about his torturers. “I had to tell them something.” A bipartisan Senate Intelligence committee report would later conclude that al-Libi lied about the link “to avoid torture.”

Libya: Daring SAS mission rescues Britons and others from desert

More than 150 workers were dramatically rescued from the Libyan desert as two RAF Hercules aircraft – backed by the SAS – pulled off a high-risk evacuation of British and other citizens.

...

It is believed that units of British special forces secured runways south of Benghazi to allow the Hercules aircraft to land safely.

...

Plans for the emergency operation, carried out with the help of the SAS and members of the Special Boat Service who had been on standby in Malta, were finalised at a meeting of the government's emergency committee, Cobra. Government sources said the operation had been hazardous and complex, because the desert compounds were under threat from armed gangs and contained nationals from many countries.

...

There were unconfirmed reports that Tony Blair had telephoned Gaddafi urging him to stop killing his own countrymen, and warning him that if he refused to do so, Nato troops might be sent in. The claims were made by one of Gaddafi's sons, Saadi, in a telephone interview from Tripoli.
