To make sure the Army doesn't swing the revolution to the people, with the silent complicity of world leaders more concerned about the stability of oil prices than people's lives, Qaddafi has brought in more than 35,000 North African mercenaries specifically from Chad, Nigeria, Guinea and Darfur. There's a Facebook video of a captured mercenary from Chad (Youtube here). Captured mercenaries confessed they were paid between $12,000 - $30,000 each. Today pamphlet ads were found in Nigeria offering them $2000/day for their savage work.

Is Qaddafi the only one paying these mercenaries? Or are EU governments, with their long history of hiring mercenaries, chipping in? I demand to know.

Libyan officials abandon Gaddafi regime en masse

25/02/2011
By Khaled Mahmoud and Sawsan Abu-Husain

Cairo, Asharq Al-Awsat – Informed sources told Asharq Al-Awsat that mass resignations have hit various Libyan state institutes, in protest against the regime's use of violence to suppress the anti-Gaddafi protests.

Sources also claimed that after over a week of protests, senior Libyan officials and government officials are now beginning to distance themselves from the Gaddafi regime, particularly in light of the brutal and bloody crack-down initiated against the Libyan protesters. However the sources clarified that senior Libyan officials in the intelligence and foreign affairs apparatus still, for the most part, remain loyal to Gaddafi and his regime.

A Western diplomat in Tripoli informed Asharq Al-Awsat that he had received information that Libyan Secretary of the General People's Committee – in effect the country's Prime Minister – Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi, had refused to take part in the press conference that was held on Wednesday on Libyan state television from Tripoli. This press conference included a number of Libyan officials, most prominently Secretary-General of the Libyan Public Congress Mohamed al-Zawi, and was held in order to announce the official Libyan viewpoint with regards to what is taking place in the country. The Western diplomat, who spoke to Asharq Al-Awsat on the condition of anonymity, said "he may have resigned, nobody knows; however al-Mahmoudi informed those close to Gaddafi that he was unhappy with the way that the Libyan state was dealing with the protests that have been taking place in different Libyan cities since last week."

Al-Mahmoudi has not appeared in public since the outbreak of the protests, nor has he made any statements to the official Libyan media, which strengthens speculation that he may have resigned.

9. WOW! That is really damning.
Clearly, they are not handling an injured casualty.

It's ridiculous that they believe they can hide the evidence in this way. Like no one has ever been able to find mass graves before.

Still I'd rather see them expending their time and energy doing this than murdering even more innocent civilians.

Thuraya Accuses Libya of Jamming Satellite Signals
By Peter B. de Selding

ShareThis
PARIS — Mobile satellite services operator Thuraya Telecommunications on Feb. 25 said it has “conclusive evidence” that Libya, one of its shareholders, is the source of “unlawful and intentional jamming” of Thuraya signals in Libya and surrounding areas over the past week.

The Dubai, United Arab Emirates-based company, which has dealt with Libya-based jamming in the past, said its technical teams are working to reduce the impact of the jamming and that, as of Feb. 25, “voice services were restored over much of the country.”

The Thuraya-2 satellite’s network is operational, it said, but is still contending with jamming attempts at its beams serving Libya. Thuraya-2 is a large mobile communications satellite built by Boeing Satellite Systems International and stationed at 44 degrees east in geostationary orbit. Thuraya also operates Thuraya-3, stationed at 98.5 degrees east.

The Thuraya statement follows similar complaints from Arab television broadcaster Al Jazeera, which said its signals into Libya had been jammed, and that the broadcaster had traced the jamming’s source to a Libyan intelligence service facility south of Tripoli.

BREAKING: Captured mercenary being shielded by Libyans
Posted on February 26, 2011 by admin
This is simply phenomenal. A captured mercenary is being shielded by a Libyan from the rest of the angry protesters. Please read the translation of what happened below.

http://www.libyafeb17.com/?p=2610

Try to listen out for the phrase khalloo hai which means keep him alive. It is repeated so much!

Translation:

Camera man: Leave him guys, leave him!
Protester: Let the world see him! Let the world see him!
Protester: Let him live! We need him to be alive!
Protester: Let him be guys! Come on, let him be!
**between 0:22-0:26 a protester is seen brandishing a knife at the bottom of the screen, the cameraman reacts by pulling him back and saying:
Cameraman: No no no NO! Keep him alive!
Protester: No no No! We need him alive! Keep him alive!
Protester: Guys! War is deceit! Be careful they might ambush you from behind! War is deceit!
Protester: Let him be! Leave him alone!
Protester: Where are you from you dog? Where are you from?
Protester: I want to know who….this battalion… (Video ends)

Noose tightens around faltering Libyan leader

BY ROBERT SIBLEY, OTTAWA CITIZEN FEBRUARY 25, 2011 11:02 PM

The Battle of Tripoli looms.

While Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi continues to clench his fist in defiance of his foes, his grip on power appears increasingly tenuous as opposition forces surround Tripoli. After a week’s fighting and bloodshed — some estimates say thousands have already died in the populist uprising — the longtime dictator has lost control of cities to the east and west of the capital, as well as much of the rest of the country. By Friday night, rebels were reportedly in control of roads and towns west of the capital.

Earlier this week, Gadhafi was full of bluster and braggadocio, promising to die a martyr — “I will fight to the last drop of my blood” — rather than surrender to those who want an end to his four-decade rule. He played the rhetorical card again Friday in hopes of rallying support. Hundreds of Libyans still seemingly loyal to the man jammed into Green Square, the city-centre plaza where the protests began last week. They held his portrait aloft, waved green flags and chanted his name for the cameras of Libyan state television, but many had their faces covered.

Standing on the ramparts of Assai al Hamra — the Red Castle — overlooking the square, Gadhafi pumped his fists and blew kisses to the crowd and told them to “get ready to fight for Libya, get ready to fight for dignity, get ready to fight for petroleum … Moammar Gadhafi is among you. I stand among the people and we will fight and we will kill them if they want.”

Killing seemed to be Gadhafi’s favourite theme, and his only response to opponents. He threatened to arm anyone who would support him. “We can crush any enemy. We can crush it with the people’s will. The people are armed and when necessary, we will open arsenals to arm all Libyan people and all Libyan tribes.”

23. Good move. Cut off the head of the tyant, minimize bloodshed.
If he really does get loyalist support it could be bloodier than it need be.

(All signs indicate as the "Battle of Tripoli" begins the "loyalists" will defect in high numbers and the mercs will tuck tail and run.)

I once knew people from Benghazi
Oppressed 42 years by Gadafi
Hearing Freedoms Call, They United one and all
Armed for war with twitter and not much more
It was a peacful Demonstration, that inspired their nation.
Confronted with guns, the Libyans did not run
Martyred in the street and blood at their feet
Off to Tripoli for Gaddafi they wanted to meet.
Rumers were spread,
Gadafi had fled
When all is done, their freedom will be won.
They did it on their own by mostly their phones.
As the world stood by listening to their cries...

30. It's terrible poetry, but that doesn't matter
Powerful experiences motivate people who may not have ever written--or even read very much--poetry before to take pen or keyboard in hand to express themselves in verse.

What counts is not the quality of the verse but the expression of emotions that are deeply felt.

After this, Libya will be awash in poetry--both the bad and the brilliant--for decades...

which for me, made it true poetry. When all this is calmer, I'm going to write an e-book or put up a website. That poem will be the preface.

I want every detail, emotion of the tremendous sacrifice for freedom be documented and honored later on.

39. It's only 'terrible' in the literary sense
Which has nothing to do with its true value.

A friend of mine keeps a file labeled "Bad Poetry." Much of it is from tributes left at the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial in D.C. By literary standards, it's pretty bad. But you're absolutely right--it is beautiful as the heartful expression of human emotion--often borne out of the most horrific trauma.

40. "As the world stood by" --
How horribly true -

That Libya has such a huge loss of life is due to Gaddafi and his insanity --

and the security he feels from the arms he controls thanks to USA, UK, France --

those who have armed this insane man for money -- to keep our MIC going!

Not their troops that have to disarm this psychopath now --

it's Libyans left with the job of doing it!!

And -- It was a beautiful poem!

What happened today isn’t acceptable.

on FEBRUARY 25, 2011

English:

Hello, I’m from Baghdad unfortunately what have happened today isn’t acceptable to anyone, and unfortunately the government didn’t know to act while they’re very simple demands. We can’t be living in an oil country in year 2011 and ask for services, improvement in services that are basic for every human. Thus the government act wrongly and is going to drag us to things and more demands bigger and bigger, there’s a possibility of the government falling, not a possibility I’m sure we’re going to do that in a month. Regards.

French:

Salutations.

AUDIO IN ENGLISH

English:

Hi, I’m Baghdad al Safoon, an Iraqi journalist based in Baghdad, I’m happy today because I covered the demonstration in Baghdad Tahrir square, which was one of many nationwide. I’m happy to see bloggers and twitters were the main players in it for the first time since 2003 year of the invasion, for it’s really the day of bloggers, and twitters I’d like to thank who follow and support Iraqis on twitter or facebook, mainly those abroad it’s the first time since the US invasion on 2003 such nationwide protest not organized or called by any political or religious parties. The Iraqi security forces reaction was a grow up on the richest experience we all want from today is a promising one. Thanks.
