Quilt causing controvery at quilt show - "Disgusting doesn't even cover it."
Controversy surrounds quilt at exhibition

HAMPTON, VA (NBC) - One quilt is causing a stir at the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Show due the mature content featured on the work of art.

Stitched into the quilt, one of 800 on display, is a naked woman with a fetus in her belly and her genitals exposed.

"It's embarrassing," said one offended visitor. "Disgusting doesn't even cover it."

------------------------

Some visitors viewed the quilt simply as art and weren't bothered by it.

"My kids know what it looks like," laughed another woman.

The quilt, which was made by Kathy Nida of California, depicts a homeless woman and her unborn child living in a cardboard box. Nida says the quilt is about being one paycheck away from desperation and begging for help.

3. no, you clueless cretins, what IS disgusting is that we have real, live people living like this in
what is so often referred to as "the greatest country in the world" THAT is disgusting, and we, as a nation, SHOULD be embarrassed.

18. Exactly. It offends their conservative sensibilities.
Not only that, they don't get art, like they don't get irony or hypocrisy. The fact that they call themselves "Pro-Life" but spend an inordinate amount of time trying to shut down women's health clinics speaks volumes.

This is not something I'd want to own, but it is an important statement.

22. I think it basically questions how can you be "pro-life" and go on and on about the rights ...
of a fetus and then cause people to live like this because of your social program slashing. If they really were "pro-life" and actually cared about children they would not allow them to be subjected to such conditions.

9. What is disgusting is that people think female genitalia is more disgusting...
than a pregnant woman 'living in a box'. A country full of woman who are homeless and this is what gets the folks attention. Power to the quilters!

13. Good for Kathy Nida
Art = Think
Who says women - or men for that matter, are not supposed to express themselves through quiling or any other art.
It is so typical of this increasingly backward country to be offended by genitals and think nothing of a pregnant woman living in a box. What do the anti-abortion toads have to say about this wonderful piece of art?

I make a quilt with something literally every person on the whole planet has seen and it's time to call out the national guard.

What's wrong with this scenario?

I have been fortunate enough to see the entire installation several times (including once in one of the reddest, most fundie counties in the country) (and, found the book from the original exhibit for $1 at a goodwill a month ago!!)

23. Quilts revealed alot about the workers in past centuries...good to see that the tradition is being
kept alive in art work reflecting the reality of life in America these days.

I might find it offensive to put on my bed in my home...but it's a WORK OF ART...and the EXPRESSION of the ARTIST that belongs for ALL TO SEE...not for me to "sleep under."

I think this is a good reflection of expression of our times and what we suffer through. Issues we thought we had solved seem to come up again for re-litigation and angst for a new generation to sort through. It's sad it came to this. But, Democracy needs to keep going and there are always the EVIL that will fight to keep human expression under a lid...where it has little hope of escaping. That Democracy/Human Rights still escapes says much about the rights of Human Kind to constantly thwart their Oppressors........

26. You could make a quilt showing the execution of 100 women and if one of their dresses was depicted..
...as having lifted up, exposing her genitals as her lifeless body lay in a ditch- then someone's bound to complain about her genitals showing, to the goddamn exclusion of all else.

That is so messed up...so messed up.

29. Considering the audience who typically go to these quilt shows, that's not surprising.
Homelessness is shocking, however--putting it on a quilt is a great way to spread that message.

35. The quilt is beautiful--that we have human beings
living on the street and left desperate enough to beg is what is ugly. Genitals are natural body parts. Our inhumanity to one another doesn't seem natural to me, at all. Taking in an entire piece of art and only seeing a fabric vulva (and then being offended) seems unnatural to me as well. How does one ignore the skill to make the bricks seem so textured and the box seem so 3-dimensional--in fabric? How does one ignore the message that poverty is a generation-to-generation problem as conveyed by the fetus in the womb?

I think the phrase "mature content", here, takes on a meaning more nuanced than just "nudity".

genitalia... not exaggerated or anything. Tastefully done. It was the basis for her published Priestess pattern.

It was shown in a MUSEUM where there were naked statues... and yet some objected to her work.

Perhaps, we thought, because it was made from cloth.

People can be so weird.

40. I don't get why a homeless person is naked in their box begging
seems to allude to something else going on. I'd add that if there was a naked man in a box begging he'd probably be labeled a pervert exposing himself.
