May 1933: Hitler Abolishes Unions
http://newsjunkiepost.com/2011/02/20/may-1933-hitler-abolishes-unions/

On May 2nd, 1933, the day after Labor day, Nazi groups occupied union halls and labor leaders were arrested. Trade Unions were outlawed by Adolf Hitler, while collective bargaining and the right to strike was abolished. This was the beginning of a consolidation of power by the fascist regime which systematically wiped out all opposition groups, starting with unions, liberals, socialists, and communists using Himmler’s state police.

Fast forward to America today, particularly Wisconsin. Governor Walker and the Republican/Tea Party members of the state legislature are attempting to pass a bill that would not only severely punish public unions (with exception for the police, fire, and state trooper unions that supported his campaign), but it would effectively end 50 years to the right of these workers to collectively bargain.

<snip definition of collective bargaining>

First of all, assaulting the rights of workers to collectively bargain has absolutely nothing to do with any immediate budgetary issues. It does however have everything to do with ending one of the basic rights of labor to organize.

Second, and more importantly, the budget “crisis” in Wisconsin is both exaggerated and created in part by the new Republican power base as a tool to attack political opponents. Walker decreased state revenue when he enacted tax cuts for the rich and big corporations, who are not surprisingly large campaign donors for his political campaign.

4. In the words of Martin Niemöller. . .
First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me

6. Shh! You can't tell the truth.
You might hurt some poor Republican's feelings and we can't offend them with the truth, despite all the bullshit they make up about us.

7. Can we compare them with the Nazis yet?
That's apparently such a no-no. No, they're CAN'T be Nazis. There's no death camps.

Remember we have to wait until they set up the death camps before we call them Nazis. :sarcasm:

8. Fuck that!
I'll call them Nazis right now before they can build the Death Camps. Besides lets be honest Gitmo isn't a death camp, but is still one giant human rights violation.

13. I was calling them Nazis years ago and having threads here banned for it.
I, and others here, were insulted, accused of being whacko conspiracy theorists, and told to stfu, no comparison. I even had a newspaper column writing offer rescinded in 2005 for even suggesting that *, the Dick, Rummy, et al were war criminals. The editor said I could write about anything I wanted.

I so wanted for us all to be wrong.

15. I'm just grateful that war criminal threads are almost common here now.
It needs to be top of the national news topic daily, along with our treatment and vilification of the destitute in this country.

It could happen! :rofl::crazy::rofl:

A belated welcome to DU, white_wolf! :hi:

18. Thanks.
I've been thinking about something for awhile. Let's face facts TN is about as red as you can get especially given the recent election results and I was thinking perhaps TN DUers could get together and try and change that. Maybe find someone who actually represents us to run for office. Its not much but I'm getting involved in Madeline Rogero's mayoral campaign. She spoke at the college Dem meeting tonight and she actually seemed like a decent candidate. She wants Knoxville to become a fully green city, she is trying to improve conditions for the homeless, and she supports Union rights to organized. In face she even helped work with Caesar Chavez in the 70s and her husband was a big Union organizer in the textile industry.

20. I appreciate your efforts in TN. Maybe you could draft Bernie Ellis!
Bernie is 'Fly by Night' at DU, but I'm sure you knew that already. :hi:

Bernie has more human sense in his tiny toe than most of the county I live in, here in NW PA, has in its entirety!

Madeline sounds wonderful! And having worked with Chavez gives her a very unique perspective that would be so favorable to workers.

Can I buy grapes yet? :)

12. Absolute same ideology - unchecked & unregulated capitalism evolves into corporate fascism.
And workers are untied with one voice is the corporations enemy - they don't want share even the smallest piece of the pie with workers - Republican corporations want it all - And destroying unions WILL accomplish this for the republican corporate fascist and their elitist agenda.

21. The State Patrol is hip to that possibility: The worm has turned
Tracy Fuller, the Executive Board President of the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Association

Feb. 16, 2011

I am going to make an effort to speak for myself, and every member of the Wisconsin State Patrol when I say this.

I VALUE THE CAPITOL POLICE, AND THE U. W. POLICE. I VALUE ALL OF THE POLICE COMMUNICATIONS OFFICERS OF ALL OF THE AGENCIES IN OUR UNION, AND THE STATE TROOPERS, AND THE INSPECTORS OF THE STATE PATROL. I VALUE “ALL” OF THE SUPPORT STAFF OF ALL OF THE AGENCIES AROUND THE STATE. I DON’T KNOW HOW ANY OF US COULD FUNCTION WITHOUT ANY OF US AROUND THE STATE WE ALL NEED EACH OTHER.

I VALUE THE BUREAU OF FIELD SERVICES, FIELD AGENTS OF LOCAL THREE, NO LESS THAN ANY OF THE OTHER MEMBERS IN THE UNION. I AM HERE FOR EVERY MEMBER OF THIS UNION AND ALWAYS THOUGHT I HAD BEEN UNTIL THIS WEEK.

I SPECIFICALLY REGRET THE ENDORSEMENT OF THE WISCONSIN TROOPER’S ASSOCIATION FOR GOVERNOR SCOTT WALKER. I REGRET THE GOVERNOR’S DECISION TO “ENDORSE” THE TROOPERS AND INSPECTORS OF THE WISCONSIN STATE PATROL. I REGRET BEING THE RECIPIENT OF ANY OF THE PERCIEVED BENEFITS PROVIDED BY THE GOVERNOR’S ANNOINTING.

I THINK EVERYONE’S JOB AND CAREER IS JUST AS SIGNIFICANT AS THE OTHERS. EVERYONES FAMILY IS JUST AS VALUABLE AS MINE OR ANY OTHER PERSONS, ESPECIALLY MINE. EVERYONES NEEDS ARE JUST AS VALUABLE. WE ARE ALL GREAT PEOPLE!!

22. Kick!
And don't forget the other justification for the Nazi label: the koch brothers. Anybody hear of ilsa koch - better known as the Bitch of Buchenwald? She had this fun idea of using human skin to make lampshades and stuff. She's a branch of their grievously diseased family tree.
