MADISON — A Wisconsin state Senate committee has passed a bill that would require voters show photo identification at the polls over the objection of a Democratic lawmaker participating in the meeting over the phone.
Sen. Jon Erpenbach is one of the 14 Senate Democrats who skipped town rather than vote on a Republican-backed bill taking away collective bargaining rights for public employees. He and other Democrats have been allowed to take part in committee meetings over the phone.
But after the meeting started on the voter ID bill, committee chairwoman Sen. Mary Lazich pressed Erpenbach on where he was and whether he was on his way back to the Capitol. Erpenbach said how quickly he got back to the Capitol was up to the governor.
Lazich didn’t allow him to vote.
