Libyan Revolution Tweets, Day 6, Part 1 (World Silence)

Day 4 threads: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7

Occasionally, since the people I follow cover Bahrain, Yemen and Jordan also, if I see something really important about those countries, I'll post it here but I plan to mostly focus on Libya because they're having the hardest time getting the word out and Qaddafi's brutality is more systematic and I believe the scale exceeds the brutality in the other country.

They're also the country with the most propagandists on Twitter.

To make sure the Army doesn't swing the revolution to the people, Qaddafi has brought in thousands of mercenaries from Pakistan, Bangladesh and other North African coutries, specifically Chad. There's a Facebook video of a captured mercenary from Chad http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=103697256377254&oid=179449562095105 (Youtube link here) Their confessions are that they've been offered between $12,000 - $30,000 each.

in a truck with an umbrella to tell everyone he is still in Libya. It was a very strange few seconds.

I thought surely there must be more other than those few seconds. Was that it? The short statement that he's still in Libya?

Edited on Tue Feb-22-11 03:25 AM by Catherina
I dedicate it to the G20 governments with a particular dedication to the US, UK, Italy, France and Germany.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxR2p88_btw

Die for it
So you call it trust
But I say it's just
In the devil's game
Of greed and lust
They don't care
They'd do me for the money
They don't care
They use me for the money
So you go to church
Read the holy word
In the scheme of life
It's all absurd
They don't care
They'd kill for the money
Do or dare
The thrill for the money
You're saluting the flag
Your country trusts you
Now you're wearing a badge
You're called the "Just Few"
And you're fighting the wars
A soldier must do
I'll never betray or deceive you my friend but
If you show me the cash
Then I will take it
If you tell me to cry
Then I will fake it
If you give me a hand
Then I will shake it
You do anything for money
Anything, anything
Anything for money
Lie for you, die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil
Anything, anything
Anything for money
Lie for you, die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil
Insurance?
Where do your loyalties lie?
Is that your alibi?
I don't think so
You don't care
You'd do her for the money
Say it's fair
You sue her for the money
You want your pot of gold
Need the Midas touch
Bet you sell your soul
'Cuz your God is such
You don't care
You kill for the money
Do or dare
The thrill for the money
Are you infected with the same disease
Of lust, gluttony and greed?
Then watch the ones
With the biggest smiles
The idle jabbers
'Cuz they're the backstabber's
If you know it's a lie
Then you will swear it
If you give it with guilt
Then you will bear it
If it's taking a chance
Then you will dare it
You do anything for money
Anything, anything
Anything for money
Lie for you, die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil
Anything, anything
Anything for money
Lie for you, die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil
Anything, anything
Anything for money
Lie for you, die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil
Anything, anything
Anything for money
Lie for you, die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil
Anything, anything
Anything for money
Lie for you, die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil
Anything, anything
Anything for money
Lie for you, die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil
I don't think so
If you show me the man
Then I will sell him
If you ask me to lie
Then I will tell him
If you're stealing with God
Then you will hell him
Anything, anything
Anything for money
Lie for you, die for you

25. Good song. This one came to mind for me:
Earth Song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAi3VTSdTxU

Earth Song lyrics

What about sunrise
What about rain
What about all the things
That you said we were to gain...
What about killing fields
Is there a time
What about all the things
That you said was yours and mine...
Did you ever stop to notice
All the blood we've shed before
Did you ever stop to notice
This crying Earth its weeping shores?

Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh
Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh

What have we done to the world?
Look what we've done.
What about all the peace,
That you pledge your only son?
What about flowering fields?
Is there a time?
What about all the dreams,
That you said was yours and mine?

Did you ever stop to notice,
All the children dead from war?
Did you ever stop to notice,
This crying Earth its weeping shores?

Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh
Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh

I used to dream
I used to glance beyond the stars
Now I don't know where we are
Although I know we've drifted far

Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh
Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh
Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh
Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh

Hey

what about yesterday
(What about us)
What about the seas
(What about us)
The heavens are falling down
(What about us)
I can't even breathe
< From : http://www.elyrics.net/read/m/michael-jackson-lyrics/earth-song-lyrics.html >
(What about us)
What about everything
(What about us)
I given you
(What about us)
What about nature's worth
(ooo, ooo)
It's our planet's womb
(What about us)
What about animals
(What about it)
Their kingdoms in dust
(What about us)
What about elephants
(What about us)
Have we lost their trust
(What about us)
What about crying whales
(What about us)
We're ravaging the seas
(What about us)
What about forest trails
(ooo, ooo)
Burnt despite our pleas
(What about us)
What about the holy land
(What about it)
Torn apart by creed
(What about us)
What about the common man
(What about us)
Can't we set him free
(What about us)
What about children dying
(What about us)
Can't you hear them cry
(What about us)
Where did we go wrong
(ooo, ooo)
Someone tell me why
(What about us)
What about baby boy
(What about it)
What about the days
(What about us)
What about all their joy
(What about us)
What about the man
(What about us)
What about the crying man
(What about us)
What about Abraham
(What was us)
What about death again
(ooo, ooo)
Do we give a damn

Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh

(I wasn't hating on Michael, but he was admittedly an odd fellow, and Gaddafi really came off very very weird with the umbrella and the golf cart looking thing.)

I fell asleep crying thinking surely this can't be happening while world leaders just watch hoping this inconvenience to their conscience and political careers fades from front page news before their own people turn against them in horror. Then it all faded to black with thankfully no dreams that I remember.

pretending to be *shocked* and then under the pretence of humanitarian aid, sending in their UN troops to make sure those oil fields remain subservient to EU way-of-life needs.

The longer this goes on, the more their immorality is exposed and they hate that, which is why they're all so silent right now, cowards hiding behind the curtains, coming out only when forcefully pushed and then only to make the lamest statements.

15. Here's the link I've been following (Al Jazeera Libya liveblog), biggest news are the mercs:
Mercenaries were the big news from when you last posted, I think. Video got out about them patrolling the cities. Egypt is also tightening their boarders (shame as I hoped they'd give a hand, but they admittedly have their own security to worry about, don't need those mercs invading now that Gaddafi has a paid army).

Good video from the liveblog: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWHZa_tZmi0&feature=player_embedded

LiveBlog itself: http://blogs.aljazeera.net/africa/2011/02/22/live-blog-libya-feb-22

I really missed your updates! But glad you got a lot of rest (seems I signed on about an hour after your last post in the other thread). My turn. Good luck, and don't over do it.

22. I read that Tunisia is trying to send in over 100 doctors.
Can't blame countries for trying to keep out the mercenary thugs who are rampaging through Libya, chasing people into their homes and terrorizing them.

He has ads in the newspapers in Nigeria and elsewhere, looking for mercecnaries. That should be stopped now that it is certain he is committing genocide.

The UN needs to hold an emergency session and declare what is happening a 'genocide'. They never did that when Rwanda was happening and that held up any kind of assistance that might have ended the slaughter.

I wonder when the world will decide to intervene. I think this is like Rwanda, it is a rare situation where the world should decide that what he is doing is genocide, and I believe that would make it possible for global, military intervention. And they should arrest him if they do.

Btw, two fighter pilots flew their planes out of Libya rather than follow the orders to kill their own people. They sought asylum in Chad I believe. More heroes.

35. When this is all over, it will be time for the people of the U.S
and of all European countries, including Canada, to start demanding answers for their countries' support for these brutal dictators.

Maybe the people of the world can join forces to demand those answers and to get laws passed to put an end to such people receiving support in our names.

I really think this needs to be a worldwide effort.

The inaction of this government, when they had no problem rushing into Afghanistan and Iraq shows how wrong our foreign policy is.

In fact, all those countries who have supported brutal dictators are complicit in their crimes. As the Wikileaks cables show, they KNOW how bad they are, but as one cable said 'he's a brutal ruler, but he lets us build our bases in his country'. That was in reference to Karamov of Uzbekistan.

You have more honor in a miniscule fingernail clipping than all Western and Arab governmental figures together.

I'd really like to thank the African brothers for reinforcing the stereotype that Africans are bloodthirsty savages. Congratulations subhuman mercenaries, wherever you're from. I hope to see you all hang right next to the subhuman Algerian, Saudi, Italian mercenaries. I'm sure there are American and French mercenaries there since there were Blackwater sightings. All of you, hanging next to Qaddafi for your crimes against humanity.

When the people win and start executing you for your savage crimes, then the world will step in tut-tutting that you're being unfair, that you're not giving them due process of the law, and how dare you kill the mercenaries the G-20 keeps in store for its dirty work?

45. The UN could stop this recruitment if they would hold an emergency
session declaring a Genocide is taking place.

This is like Rwanda all over again, where the world's leaders just sat and talked and did nothing.

Tweets from P.J. Crowley are so weak I cannot even read them anymore. After seeing his interview on Al Jazeera during the Egyptian uprising where he just refused to make a clear statement of where the U.S. stood, I lost all respect for him.

Letter from Tripoli: An eyewitness account

...

He also saw three Chinook helicopters flying over his neighborhood, heading north toward the center of the city. More details about that below. Ali and his neighbors take turns patrolling the neighborhood around the clock, to protect it from roaming mercenary soldiers; but otherwise they stay at home. Since Qaddafi’s regime enforced a strict ban on civilians owning firearms, they are using makeshift weapons to protect themselves. Ali said he is armed with a crowbar. The mercenaries, Ali said, are everywhere. They come mostly from Chad and Darfur.

...

He also heard from several sources that officers in Benghazi, including air force officers, had been executed for refusing orders to kill the anti-government demonstrators. The same sources described a mass grave near Benghazi, containing the bodies of more than 100 executed officers.
...

A: Libyans are disappointed and consider the world reaction as a very weak one. From the TV official announcements the US and the EU, for example, tried to be very careful with their condemnation. It was quite clear that they were weighing their options and the consequences of either angering a surviving Qaddafi and the shame of being silent towards this carnage. Oil contracts and work opportunities for their locals seem to have a higher priority than even frowning at a tyrant going berserk on his people. Only when Qaddafi’s chances proved to be weak did they take a bolder stance; that is when they started to actually condemn the killings – but a bit too late.

...

A: Yes, I saw three Chinook helicopters over flying my neighborhood north bound. They either were going to drop of their load in Miteega airbase north of Tripoli or drop mercenaries in the middle of the city. These are large helicopters with a 20,000 pound load capability or 40 troopers with full gear. They passed almost 30 minutes before fixed wing jets started flying and the helis made several passes traveling southbound and north bound again. Clearly they were busy dropping off something and loading up again.

Be forewarned, these are graphic images of the savage butchery the Libyan people are living with while we bitch about the price of gas and drag our feet applauding the most ludicrous, lame, complicit hand-wringing maiden-in-distress statements from our governments who have no problems with butchering people for oil and their UN version of Farmville.

UN get involved, declare a Genocide and then act accordingly.

Hillary Clinton 'condemned the bloodshed'. A lot of good that will do for these heroic people.

And a lot of talk about the weapons sales to Libya. From the U.S. and from Britain. Demonstrations tomorrow in London protesting the sale of weapons to brutal dictators.

a Libyan protestor hodling up a huge automatic weapon that was made in the U.S. It was big and powerful. They must have taken it from one of the mercs.

This does need to be investigated.

There are solidarity demonstrations in New York and in San Francisco, London and other countries in Europe.

Edited on Tue Feb-22-11 04:52 AM by pinboy3niner
From CNN's news blog:

(2:09 a.m. ET, 9:09 a.m. local: ) As Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi announced Tuesday that he was still in charge of the country, the U.N. Security Council readied to meet later in the day to discuss the spreading unrest there - the first time the council has held consultations over any of the revolts that have swept the Arab world since January.

This picture was found on Al Jazeera:

Ben Wedeman, who was great reporting on Egypt, has landed in Libya for CNN. He's the first outside journalist to get there.

I followed him during the Egyptian uprising and was surprised he was a CNN reporter as he was very critical of their early coverage of the revolution. I remember him saying 'I don't know what revolution CNN is reporting on but it's not the one I'm seeing'.
