Wisconsin Medical Society: Physician actions as reported unacceptable

Madison, Wis. (February 21, 2011) – The Wisconsin Medical Society was notified during the weekend that physicians may have been writing work excuses for people attending rallies at the state Capitol in a manner that is not consistent with acceptable medical practices. If these reports are accurate, the Society does not condone these actions under any circumstances. We are aware that the Wisconsin Medical Examining Board, the entity that licenses and disciplines physicians, has received information about these events.

The physician-patient relationship is a cornerstone for providing high quality health care. Important elements of that relationship, such as conducting proper medical evaluations of patients, should not be taken lightly. We value the trust that patients, employers and the public have placed in physicians, and we hope that these events do not undermine Wisconsin’s history of being a health care leader.

The Society will continue its efforts to maintain the high level of trust that patients, employers and the public expect of our profession. With more than 12,000 members dedicated to the best interests of their patients, the Society takes allegations like these very seriously.

1. What are they going to do about Walker's sneak attack on Medicaid:
http://www.thedailypage.com/daily/article.php?article=32255

The hidden assault on Medicaid

Lost in the hubbub about Walker's attack on collective bargaining rights is the fact that he's also included a provision that would give the Department of Health Services, now run by a guy who's on record with some very controversial statements about Medicaid, the right to restructure the program "without approval by the Legislature and without having to abide by current law governing benefits and programs."

Between this and Walker's support of Attorney General Van Hollen's joining a lawsuit against the federal health care law, Wisconsinite's should probably brace themselves for a very bumpy, unhealthy road ahead.

Can we recall this guy yet?

2. Huh, that's funny. Not a single med society came out against Dr. Frist diagnosing Terry Schiavo
via video camera without having examined her at all. At least the docs in the WI Capital got a chance to actually SEE their patients. If they had symptoms of "stress", I'm sure they had a visual on the patient in person - far better than anything Dr. Frist ever did.

For me, the doctors in the Capital spent at least as much time examining/talking to their patients as I've ever had with a doctor.

3. I'll tell them what is unacceptable
1. Keeping quiet while working in a profession that leaves millions without access to medical care.
2. Keeping quiet in communities smothered with industrial pollution.
3. Working for corporations they KNOW are gouging patients.
4. Turning people in pain away with no help.
5. Working in practices that turn away people who do not have insurance.

that is just starters. The holier than thou medical profession fails to recognize most of us are aware they fail to live up to their so-called ethics on many fronts.

4. I hope they take on the people who were pretending to be doctors for impersonating a doc, practicing
without a license, etc. I'd like to see them go after them.

5. Is there any evidence that this actually happened?
From what I saw, these were actual doctors providing the notes.

6. Rumors was what I read, haven't researched it fully though
I am a skeptic and it wouldn't surprise me to have some people joining in or giving the detractors something to complain about.

I think a lot of people learned this weekend what a doctor's not is and isn't these days. Things have changed a lot in the last yrs with the privacy regs.
