Libyan Revolution Tweets Part 2

Previous Parts: Part 1

Occasionally, since the people I follow cover Bahrain, Yemen and Jordan also, if I see something really important about those countries, I'll post it here but I plan to mostly focus on Libya because they're having the hardest time getting the word out and Qaddafi's brutality is more systematic and I believe the scale exceeds the brutality in the other country.

They're also the country with the most propagandists on Twitter.

To make sure the Army doesn't swing the revolution to the people, Qaddafi has brought in thousands of mercenaries from Pakistan, Bangladesh and other North African coutries, specifically Chad. There's a Facebook video of a captured mercenary from Chad http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=103697256377254&oid=179449562095105 (Youtube link here) Their confessions are that they've been offered between $12,000 - $30,000 each.

Libya protests: 'Terror and bribery are blunt tools now'
Author Hisham Matar pleads with Muammar Gaddafi to hold his troops back

Hisham Matar
guardian.co.uk, Friday 18 February 2011 20.50 GMT

...

The regime became nervous, promising students a large number of generous scholarships abroad. Then it vowed to increase salaries.

...

On the 16th, a day before the planned protests, Libyan's could no longer wait. They went out in Benghazi. There was a palpable fear that the hot-blooded second city was going it alone, that the few thousand protesters were lambs going to slaughter. Their courage seemed unimaginable.

Late that night one of the Benghazi protestors posted a video on YouTube. He looked tired. His voice was hoarse.

"To my brothers in Tripoli," he said, "we can't do this alone."

Libya: Snipers shoot mourners, killing 15

By MAGGIE MICHAEL
Associated Press

...

Doctors in Benghazi said Friday that 35 bodies had been brought to the hospital following attacks by security forces backed by militias, on top of more than a dozen killed the day before. Standing in front of Jalaa Hospital morgue, a witness said that the bodies bore wounds from being shot "directly at the head and the chests."

Residents of the city set up neighborhood patrols on Saturday, after police left the streets.

"We don't see a single policeman in the streets, not even traffic police," a lawyer in Benghazi said. People regarded the disappearance of the police as an ominous sign, fearing that pro-government forces would soon follow up the encampment raid with house-to-house attacks.

...

The Khamis Brigade is led by Gadhafi's youngest son Khamis Gadhafi, and U.S. diplomats in leaked memos have called it "the most well-trained and well-equipped force in the Libyan military." The witnesses' reports that it had been deployed could not be independently confirmed.

BREAKING: Gaddafi’s Nephew is DEAD in Birka Barracks due to GRENADE thrown!
Posted on February 19, 2011 by admin

LibyanYouthMovement, the only known tweeter who have eyewitnesses ON THE GROUND confirm that Gaddafi’s nephew has just been killed due to an exploding grenade in Birka Barracks! The barracks were heavily protected with mortars and snipers which led to the dead of 55 in Benghazi! A confirmed statement from the ground states that wall has collapsed in the Birka Barracks.

Eyewitnesses in Tripoli are confirming that protests are developing quickly but were dispersed by army secret police and Revolutionary Guard. They state that the regime fully realise that Tripoli is the last city and they must hold onto it.

Moroccans riot ahead of protests
Demonstrators in city of Tangier attack police station in dispute over utility firm's management.
Last Modified: 19 Feb 2011 17:25 GMT

The violence came one day before a planned nationwide protest to push for political reform
Protesters have attacked a police station and premises linked to French firms in the Moroccan city of Tangier in a dispute over the local utility firm's management, organisers and residents have said.

Saturday's violence came a day before a planned nationwide protest to push for political reform but there was no immediate evidence of a direct link.

"No tear gas, nothing was fired. They used long truncheons to disperse the crowds"

Local witness

Riot police intervened to break up the protest in Tangier, which evolved from a sit-in in front of the city hall to a march that gathered hundreds of protesters, the Moroccan branch of the local activist organisation, Attac, said on its website.

The sit-in was organised to push for the cancellation of a utilities contract that the city has awarded to an affiliate of the French firm Veolia.

Protesters occupy Manama square, shooting in Libya

By Cynthia Johnston and Frederik Richter
MANAMA | Sat Feb 19, 2011 12:48pm EST

(Reuters) - Protesters in Bahrain won a symbolic victory on Saturday, Libyan security forces opened fire to disperse mourners and a new party was approved in Egypt as the uprisings sweeping the Arab world challenged its rulers.

...

A security source said clashes were still under way in the region between Benghazi and Al Bayda, 200 km away, adding that many police stations had been damaged or set on fire.

New York-based Human Rights Watch said Friday's killings took to 84 its estimated death toll in three days of protests, mostly around Benghazi, against a ruling elite accused of hoarding Libya's oil wealth and denying political freedoms.

The Benghazi-based newspaper Quryna said 24 people were killed in the city on Friday, shot when security forces fired to stop protesters attacking the police headquarters and a military building where weapons were stored.

59. Get the word out. Express anger, not concern, to the WH, call the UN
expose the hypocrisy, appeal to humanity, to conscience.

Same question on my end

Libyans in US allege coercion
Ambassador denies students' claims embassy threatened to cut scholarships if they missed pro-Gaddafi rallies.
Evan Hill Last Modified: 17 Feb 2011 22:40 GMT

In an apparent effort to control the public narrative in the wake of rare protests that have spread throughout Libya, the country's government is threatening to withdraw scholarship funding from citizens studying in the United States unless they attend pro-government rallies in Washington this weekend, Al Jazeera has learned.

Several Libyans studying in the US said they and their peers have received phone calls this week from a man employed by the Libyan embassy instructing them to join rallies in the capital on Friday and Saturday. The man told the students that their government-funded scholarships would be cut off if they did not attend.

Ali Suleiman Aujali, the Libyan ambassador to the United States, denied the students' allegations. He told Al Jazeera they were "completely incorrect" and an attempt to "blackmail" the government's reputation.

The reports of coercion come as protesters in Libya mounted a "day of rage" on Thursday and continued their calls for the end of Muammar Gaddafi’s 42-year reign as Libya’s leader.
