How many of you have been literally floored when you see a documentaries that reveal the myriad of abuses to people, animals and the environment by corporations? They are everywhere and almost ubiquitous.
There is a lot of damaged done, both short-term and in the long-term. Despite the millions they spend on PR and glossy, "we care" cover-ups, the destruction is so severe, it is getting harder to put a bow and some wrapping paper on it to keep it under wraps.
Now, who in their right mind would take out all the stops and let corporations policed themselves or expect them to practice altruism when you seriously take into consideration the nature and purpose of a corporation? The corporate veil was originally intended to shield individuals from liability, thus reducing risk. Though that veil is meant to be pieced if malfeasance and illegal activity is suspected, we can see that mega-corps with huge legal funds and lots of influence rarely see their executives held accountable or sent to prison.
The sole purpose of a corporation and its controlling executives is to create and preserve profit. They are legally obligated to do so above all else. Regulations are the only practical way to stop or, at the very least, limit the amount of damage a herd of stampeding profit buffaloes can do in heated pursuit of their purpose.
While the illusion is that there are many, many shareholders that "own" the company, it is those who hold the controlling interest that can be called the owners and the major recipients of the wine that fills all holy grail of profit. So, as the corporate charter has morphed over decades to strengthen and increase the power of that fictitious entity, elevating it to the ranks of person-hood, it is, for the large part, a well-crafted mask and a cloak of protection for Elites who are free to suck, as profit, the wealth of those who work for them into their coffers freely and with immunity and a form of anonymity. They become more and more powerful, not because they are inherently powerful people, but because they take the power from the people under their control and influence.
Now, the size and the money give the illusion weavers more potential to move and sway the masses. Oh, they were great at manufacturing wants and needs before, but now that predatory influence has taken root in every aspect of our lives and, for profit's sake, will take over completely if left unchecked.
Regulations? You bet! Essential. While corporations say they are hindered by them, that's just a whiny ruse. Regulations may be the only barrier to a virtual hell on Earth under total corporate rule.
