The main point here should be discussion.

I deeply appreciate recs and the appreciation from readers that these imply. But I'm sure I'm not the only one who values responses (even negative ones) even more, because these are what keep a topic in discussion. It's nice to see 22 recs for a post but without a reply, at least a kick, it drops off the front page and gets no more readers. More importantly, it doesn't start discussion and debate, with the chance of people learning things and persuading each other of different ideas, or even coming up with new ideas, which is what a message board should be all about.
