Protesters cheer Wisconsin Assembly Democrats

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin Assembly Democrats are getting cheers from protesters at the state Capitol as they prepare to debate a GOP bill that would strip almost all public sector workers of virtually all their collective bargaining rights.

Republicans control the Assembly, but hundreds of protesters jammed the hallways around the chamber anyway and shouted "Kill the Bill" as lawmakers filed to the floor for a roll call before breaking for party meetings.

Democrats showed up in orange T-shirts that proclaimed they support working families. After the roll call, Democrats on their way out exchanged high-fives with protesters, who cried out "thank you" as they walked by. The protesters unleashed venomous boos and screams at Republicans as they left the chamber.

Senators were considering Republican Gov. Scott Walker's bill to end collective bargaining, except on issues of salary, for most public employees. Walker has said the bill will help close Wisconsin's $137 million shortfall in the state's current budget and a projected $3.6 billion deficit in the next two-year budget.

20. I was being sarcastic, guess you missed it.
But then again, someone who feels as you do may not be able to pick up on the complexities of sarcasm.

You could move somewhere fabulous, like Ohio or something. Don't let the door hit you on your way out Bye now!

9. California girl standing with you guys in Wisconsin
Keep up the good fight! I'm watching Rachel Maddow right now as I type this comment. She is reminding viewers of the importance of unions and people's right to bargain. You are not just fighting for the rights of Wisconsin residents, but all over the U.S. If your right to bargain is taken away in Wisconsin, other states will follow suit. :o :yourock:

12. Does it make you wonder?
Where has all our money gone?! We the People work our little hoofies to the quick, and for what?! Virtually every state, or city, or municipality is deeply in the red! I know that Bush's illegal invasion of Iraq and his failed 'war' in Afghanistan have grown our federal deficit to a heretofore unseen high of $14 trillion. When you look at the per capita share of that debt, it's over $45,000! Little CHILDREN who don't yet have an viable earning capacity are already in debt for more than they are likely to make each year, unless the average annual salary of the average US worker with a HS diploma climbs precipitously from the current median of $26,505!

I find it ironic that politicians like Boehner are pounding the bloody pulpit about the deficit when they've been quite the big spenders over the last decade. Teh basterds!

18. This is what real Democrats look like. Drawing a line in the sand.
The message is clear: stop attacking poor and working class families.

If only the message would trickle UP to our "leaders" in the party.

22. It would have been nice
if they'd drawn that line in the sand last November. Where was all this passion while Walker was being elected and Feingold was being voted out? How many of the protestors didn't vote hard Democratic or stayed home on Election Day?

23. Nice to see some spineless Dims standing up for
us folks.

Not that Wi Dims have a whole lot of choice at the moment if they every want to get reelected (a lesson I wish Obama would learn), but the T's do make a statement.
