The Threat to Social Security is Real and Closed Door Discussions Have Commenced
Edited on Thu Feb-17-11 09:17 AM by jtown1123
We need to get on a massive letter writing and calling campaign ASAP.

Let all your elected officials know they will lose their seats if they agree to any of these Republicans ideas to "reform" Social Security, otherwise known as cutting it.

Obama met with Senate leadership on Wednesday. Reid said hell no to Social Security cuts, and Obama didn't SS off the table:

Obama: Talks on entitlements 'have already begun'-YAHOO NEWS. Reid, who requested Wednesday's Senate leadership meeting with the president, reiterated his view in the meeting that Social Security is in fine shape for decades and shouldn't be targeted for cuts, according to two Democratic aides with knowledge of the discussion. They spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the private conversations. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110217/ap_on_re_us/us_obama_budget;_ylt=AgII2OyieiMsZqe79JjETDRI2ocA;_ylu=X3oDMTJsMmxubGc5BGFzc2V0A2FwLzIwMTEwMjE3L3VzX29iYW1hX2J1ZGdldARwb3MDNQRzZWMDeW5fcGFnaW5hdGVfc3VtbWFyeV9saXN0BHNsawNvYmFtYXRhbGtzb24-

Reid wants no cuts to Social Security-YAHOO NEWS. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Wednesday that cost-cutting in large government benefit programs is possible "as long as you eliminate Social Security" from the discussion, registering opposition to prominent proposals to hold down spending."Social Security has contributed not a single penny to the deficit. So we can talk about entitlements as long as you eliminate Social Security," said Reid, D-Nev. "Because Social Security is not part of the problem we have in America with the deficit." http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110217/ap_on_re_us/us_reid_social_security;_ylt=Ask367vqHNPwKqRjYwQXHvNI2ocA;_ylu=X3oDMTJ0a2ZpMTd0BGFzc2V0A2FwLzIwMTEwMjE3L3VzX3JlaWRfc29jaWFsX3NlY3VyaXR5BHBvcwM3BHNlYwN5bl9wYWdpbmF0ZV9zdW1tYXJ5X2xpc3QEc2xrA3JlaWR3YW50c25vYw--

Today, Obama is meeting with Pelosi and Democratic Leadership. These morons will lose even more Democratic seats if they agree to raise the retirement age or reduce COLA.

Basically, all of these negotations are going to be done behind closed doors and it's up to us to cause a huge stink about this. Write your local papers, call your reps, write letters, be a major pain in the ass.

Basically, our biggest advocates are Reid and Senator Sanders. We need more high profile Dems on this fight. We need to push back in a major way. This is going to take a grassroots effort to stop these cuts.

To get you started, check out NCPSSM's Truth Squad Page: http://www.ncpssm.org/truth_squad/index.php

The have letters to reps, letters to the editor, a letter to the White House and a legislative hotline that will connect you with your reps with a prerecorded message opposing Social Security cuts...Thanks for listening and keep up the good fight!

Oh, and here is an excellent piece by Daniel Marans explaining how Dems should negotiate this: http://www.ourfuture.org/blog-entry/2011020716/wwtod-what-would-tip-oneill-do

6. Thanks; I just read it. I just wish the congress critters would spend as
much time analysing defense and tax cuts to the rich. The Social Security administration is one of the few governmental institutions that works well....they needs a hands off policy and that includes taking ANY $$$ from it to fund their schemes.

11. Seniors are most certainly united! Check out NCPSSM. They get their news from TV
so they are easily confused and misled. Seniors do a lot of the legwork with sending letters, calling, actually showing up to vote. Seniors are very aware of this threat.

17. 70% against tax cuts for millionairs, and it was a forgone conclusion
Write all the letters you want, and I have written thousands, it wont work. They have the game rigged and hope we don't see through the facade. Writing letters would cause a wry smile, that's all.

I think it would take more than writing letters at this point -peacefuly.
