This letter is in reference to the recent announcements the governor has come out with concerning state employees. I'm not a state employee, so I'm impartial on this matter.
What he's doing is shameful. It's easy for him and other lawmakers to say that all state workers need to sacrifice. They're already losing eight days of pay a year through the furlough program Gov. Jim Doyle instituted. Now they're supposed to come up with more money each month to pay toward insurance and retirement.
Think about it — what if you were told you suddenly had to come up with this extra money every month? What would it do to your budget? The governor is not considering what this is going to do to hundreds of Wisconsin families.
Why target the state employees? We should all share in this. A sales tax increase would hurt less and bring in more.
The governor is obviously out- of-touch with the average middle-class person in Wisconsin. If he had a clue, he would realize what a hardship this will be on many Wisconsin families and, ultimately, our economy.
