Barbara Moore: Walker sure isn’t good for our state
Dear Editor: I’ve worked for 26 years in special education. My dad taught in the vocational system for many years. Both my dad and I loved what we were doing. The pay may not have equaled the public sector pay, but our families always had good health benefits and retirement. We knew that we could take care of our own. Besides the kids, that was a good reason for choosing education. Who would choose education now?

Gov. Scott Walker’s bill would cut my pay by at least $6,000 a year. There would be nothing to stop a school from letting me go if this bill goes through. I am the sole support of my family. My husband lost his job 18 months ago -- there aren’t many jobs out there for someone in the window business who is 61 years old.

I don’t see how cutting many people’s salary will help the state budget. Won’t tax revenue be lower? Won’t people spend less? As a business, that would give me second thoughts about locating in Wisconsin. I will have to cut even more than I have the past 18 months. I can’t help out my sons, who are laid off or working fewer hours.

Just the mention of the National Guard sent shivers down my spine. I will demonstrate against this bill and this governor. He is so completely arrogant and has no desire to compromise. I guess the people of Wisconsin got what they wanted, but he sure isn’t good for the state.

Barbara Moore
