Bieber fans go on Grammy-fueled Wikipedia rampage

By Helen A.S. Popkin

The quintessential Wikipedia editor is a 25-year-old guy, a graduate student and typically overrepresented in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Except for maybe in the last 24 hours. Apoplectic over bassist and vocalist Esperanza Spalding's dark horse win for Best New Artist Grammy, beating out Justin Bieber, True Beliebers took to Wikipedia to vent their rage over this shocking injustice.

While there’s no quick way to prove that the more than 90 edits made on Spalding’s Wikipedia entry in the hours following her win were largely the work of adolescent girls, much of the handiwork is in the now-notorious style of today’s refined young ladies of the Internet.

"JUSTIN BIEBER DESERVED IT GO DIE IN A HOLE. WHO THE HECK ARE YOU ANYWAY?" is just one of the un-annotated "facts"added since to Spalding’s entry last night. "SHE IS F****** REATARD," is another of the whimsical turns of phrase (with spelling to match!), added, and since edited from the post. And according to one helpful editor, Spalding’s middle name was, ever so briefly, "Quesadilla."

To be fair, not all of the offending Wikipedia edits dripped with hormones and poorly-blended eye shadow. Trolls were quick to bait Beliebers with anti-Bieber jabs; several tinged with the homophobia typical of the Internet and often attributed to males. "HaHa Justin Bieber, you're just a little boy with no Grammy for Best New Artist.irehjbpojeh

4. As little as I care about the Grammys,
I was happy to see both Bieber and GaGa get just what they deserve, nothing.

Neither of them are in any sense groundbreaking artists, or frankly any kind of decent artist at all. Just a couple of flavor-of-the-month pop tarts hustling for the bucks.

10. Gaga got three Grammys. This is nothing?
I've been a musician since the age of five (classical on two instruments and voice).

Lada Gaga has an excellent voice. I can tell from her belting on "Bad Romance".

She is much more talented than Madonna. She is a competent pianist and very bright. I watched the interview with Anderson Cooper.

I do not understand the weird clothes at all, either, but I would much rather listen to her songs which have verses, choruses, and structure, than the rap crap of Eminem.

GaGa can sing. I'd much rather listen to her than Katy Perry, for instance.

I also enjoyed the Anderson Cooper interview. She seems thoughtful. I appreciate her emphasis on self-esteem.

There certainly ARE some talented singers out there, but many of the pop "stars" cannot really sing at all.
And wasn't the "singer" in question lady gaga?
I hope you understand the point I am trying to make.

But original? Sorry, but she has ripped off her image and style from Madonna, Cindy Lauper, Annie Lennox, and Grace Jones. She is hardly original.

24. I admit, I have never heard GaGa live,
So I can't judge her true voice. However it seems to me that on Bad Romance and other works of hers, the vocals are overprocessed, run through too many electronic filters. To me, this has always been a sign that the person's actual voice is on the mediocre to poor side of the vocal range.

As far her talent, we'll have to agree to disagree. To me, it seems as though she is simply doing a retread combination of Madonna, Lauper and Lennox. Likewise, the visual and showmanship of GaGa comes off as simply being an updated version of Madonna and other such flamboyant performers. There is little or nothing original in her work.

29. She is definitely talented.
I think her show promo style turns some people off. That's why I don't watch the Grammys or MTV Awards. They either try too hard to be unlikeable, or too much drama. I like the Oscars and golden globe because you're bound to find talent that doesn't take themselves too seriously and they know how to pull off wit without bringing down the tone of the entire show.

32. You might be surprised to know that Bieber is a very talented
musician. He plays the guitar, piano, drums and the trumpet (self-taught) and he is very good and very talented musically.
I think that many can just lump these teeny bop artists in the same box--but realistically, they don't all belong there.
Disney chews these kids up and spits them out. I will agree with that and MANY of them are really not that talented. But take a look at the kids who are successful--most of those kids are talented and are not Disney.

54. I heard about one of those incidents
but my experience is that people lie. They just do.

http://www.starpulse.com/news/index.php/2010/04/28/justin_bieber_mad_that_fan_knocked_ove
However, his fleeting journey through the terminal turned sour when one overeager fan knocked his mum to the floor and stole the star's hat.

In a post on his Twitter.com page, Bieber raged, "The airport was crazy. Not happy that someone stole my hat and knocked down my mama. Come on people. I want to be able to sign and take pics and meet my fans, but if you are all pushing security won't let me. Let's keep it safe and have fun."

Not disputing what you said you read--but there are always haters out there. And a teen boy superstar would surely bring them out.

What you reported reminded of an incident that happened around here regarding Miranda Lambert. I had some friends that were at this event and they say that the assault just never happened.

http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20195673,00.html
>>>snip
Miranda Lambert has been cleared of accusations of assaulting a fan in a Texas bar, authorities announced Friday.

Earlier this week, a woman identified as Aisha Esbay accused the country singer of pushing her multiple times during an argument in Bootlegger's, in Tyler, after she asked for an autograph.

"After police spent numerous hours researching the case, Esbay's claims were found to be completely false," says a statement from the Smith County Sheriff's Office. All alleged assault charges have been dropped against the singer.

Esbay has been arrested and charged with a misdemeanor offense of filing a false report to a police officer, according to police. She is currently being held at Smith County Jail.

I do like Gaga's acoustic version of Paparazzi. She has a decent enough voice compared to the Britney Spears and Ke$has of the music industry. And she plays an instrument, plus writes her own material.

That said, it's nice to see some truly great, unique, and talented artists get recognized for their work (and hopefully a sales boost as well).

Or Hilton heads, Kardashian cultists, whatever. If so, what do you do? Does it just drive you up the wall? Do you shrug and say kids'll be kids? Are you secretly disappointed in them, or feel you've done something wrong? Do you ban these fake celebs in your household, try to reason with them, what?

If I were a parent I'd go through the roof and ban em all to their rooms till they're 17. Good thing I'm not a parent.

63. I didn't like Led Zep when they were new, like in '70.
Too much distortion.

I think Madonna is mediocre. Cyndi Lauper has an excellent voice.

Celine Dion has a very good voice. She catches a lot of shit for that suckwad Titanic song. Her stuff in French is good. I don't know why they picked on her on SNL.

I still say Lada Gaga has an excellent voice, even though I HATE autotune, and I can tell she is a competent pianist (I took piano for twelve years, violin for nine years, voice for two years).

She is very bright. When she was talking about her drug use she said, "I don't lie."

That's the first time I have heard ANYONE on TV say that.

68. Exactly--our tastes change and if we all shared the same ones life would be
gawdawful boring. I didn't like Led Zep either until my then 13 yo son started liking them last year. Mpw I love 'em.

66. If you want to see just how clueless some of these Beliebers are
This is the Justin Bieber cover of the Brazilian equivalent to America's "Tiger Beat" magazine...

The Bieber fans are all up in arms: "They photoshopped Justin's picture! They put lip gloss and eye makeup on him! They airbrushed away every little flaw on his face! Oh this is terrible!"

Okay, let me ask you a question. You are the art director for this magazine. You are going to put a picture of Justin Bieber in this much makeup on the cover of your book. Would you (a) pay a Photoshop expert $500 to smooth the skin, line the eyes and gloss the lips of a photo you already had, or (b) just have your stylist glam him out?
