CIA boss's error started confusion

This much was clear yesterday in the midst of much confusion: the White House does not know what is happening in Egypt and is almost powerless to do anything to sway Mr Mubarak.

CIA director Leon Panetta set expectations running wild when he said during evidence to a house intelligence committee hearing on Capitol Hill that there was "a strong likelihood that Mubarak may step down this evening".

On board Air Force One, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs was flummoxed when asked by reporters if he could confirm Mr Panetta's forecast. "We're watching a very fluid situation," Mr Gibbs said.

Did Mr Panetta have authorisation to tell the US congress what he did?

With President Barack Obama on the flight, Mr Gibbs replied: "Let me . . . I don't know what question elicited what testimony, so I want to, without having seen that, I think that would be tough for me to comment on."
