he couldn't solve the crisis. Not to mention that the rescue mission he authorized was sabotaged and all fingers point to the former head of the CIA George Bush. Carter had cut the CIA budget and apparently the CIA had to laid off many officers. Bush had a ready made group of possible contacts that helped foil the rescue attempt. Thus Carter looked incompetent and the people voted in Raygun and Papa Bush. The day of Rayguns was sworn in... the Iranians let the hostages free.

Raygun had negotiated with "terrorists" to free the hostages... as I understand it... the payment for their release .."A few shoulder weapons"... as Raygun recalled. They were actually very high tech stinger missiles.
