My understanding is that, constituationally, the Speaker of the Parliament becomes the nominal President, but it appears the military council is really in charge. What does that leave for the VP?

1. What does that leave? If there is any justice, it leaves torture.
What's sauce for the goose, etc.

I'm only partially kidding.

3. "The Military Supreme Council will run the affairs of the country"
That was part of Suleman's statement... Sounds like he's out as well.

Maybe a coup within the last 24 hours?

4. The Slow Dance Continues...
This is a situation happening at several levels. The next step to watch is to see if the "state of emergency" is lifted to allow the formation of political parties to participate in upcoming elections. For all intents the old Constitution is going to be warped (as it has in the past) and the key here is to see which direction things go.

Definitely the military is in charge...as they have been for the past 58 years. The question here is how do you transition from a military state to a more representative one. There's a lot of work to be done...much of it behind the scenes to enable elections to happen. Right now the country isn't ready...but given time and support it could happen.

5. Looks that way--Mubarak didn't hand him power, he handed it to the Army.
Which is dangerous in and of itself.

6. First things first.

From what I have heard, their "constitution" was/is pretty much invalidated by the 30 year dictatorship. Since Mubarak gave authority to his "vice president" before he left, I doubt that there will be and interference from the other guy.

The handwriting is on the wall, and they all know there needs to be a whole NEW constitution that will work for the people.

I think they are at square-one, and will hopefully start up at constitutional conference so they have one in place by fall..

It can be done.. They have educated people, and people who are effective..Look at what they have just done:)
