<snip>
Vice-President Omar Suleiman made the announcement in a brief statement on state TV.

It came as thousands massed in Cairo and other Egyptian cities for an 18th day of protest to demand Mr Mubarak's resignation.

3. Who cares?
More Berlin than Tianamen, eh nadin?

Peaceful Revolution in Egypt!

What a celebration! Good weekend for the world and for the hope of the youth of Egypt for freedom and the new nation they can build!

April 6 Movement wins in Egypt and it is as non-violent as we could hope for.

There is hope for the world.

Thank Dog!

9. I said 12 days ago we were over the tipping point,
two weeks.

I wonder how much intramural threats of violence and actual violence actually happened. The way Suleiman looked was clear some of that went on over the last 24 hours.

Good news, he is out and whatever violence that happened staid inside the corridors of power.

6. Next Step...
...eliminating the "state of emergency" that prohibited the establishment of a political opposition and would open the doors to the formation of new parties to participate in upcoming elections.

This is a carefully orchestrated dance here that is a little bit Velvet revolution and a little bit like the government changes in Latin and South America in the 90s that replaced military juntas with a more representative government.

I feel elated for the Eygptian people right now...this is truly historical television. But now the hard work begins...creating a representative government where none had ever existed. This administration has been doing an excellent job in helping shepard this change along...and if it leads to elections and a better day in Egypt, the world is a better place as well.

Cheers...

7. Now what?
Suleiman or a military cabal?

Looks as though the military is now in charge.

I hope there is some path to democracy.

10. I think they will
they will run elections, perhaps in September, perhaps sooner. It takes time to run actually CLEAN elections. For the moment I am guessing the military council is in charge.

14. It was announced
that the military would be the caretakers until elections in September.

Indeed lots of work to do between now and then, real opposition candidates and real debate on establishment of new freedoms/responsibilities.

Ah, I love the smell of liberation in the morning!

8. And who will fill the vacuum now? It might seem like a people's revolution but
who is waiting in the wings? I haven't a clue but am very nervous about it.

19. From watching who has been directing this peaceful revolution
it is labor organizers, women, workers, civil servants, professionals, doctors, lawyers, scholars.

Meet the people of the revolution in Egypt:

Egypt: Seeds of change

People & Power reveals the story behind the unprecedented political protests in Egypt.

It is widely accepted that the spark for the recent dramatic events in Egypt came from last month's uprising in Tunisia. If people power could bring down one regime perhaps it could do the same elsewhere. Many of the necessary conditions were already in place: public fury at years of political repression, an economy that rewarded a corrupt elite and kept a majority in poverty, and widespread loathing for a leader clinging to office.

Could Egyptians be persuaded to overcome 30 years of fear and apathy and take to the streets?

It is no accident that this question has been answered, emphatically. Over the course of a remarkable fortnight, People & Power has been filming exclusively behind the scenes with a core group of young activists from the April 6th opposition movement. As Elizabeth Jones reveals, they have spent a long time planning and organising for these momentous days, taking lessons from other revolutions about how to mobilise popular support.

This episode of People & Power can be seen from Wednesday, February 9, at the following times GMT: Wednesday: 2230; Thursday: 0930; Friday: 0330; Saturday: 1630; Sunday: 2230; Monday: 0930.

You just might get it.

When the military and the GID runs the government, how much "change" has really taken place?
