SANTA FE, N.M. — Guns have long been taboo in schools, but a state legislator wants to change that in New Mexico.

A proposal Rep. Zach Cook, a Ruidoso Republican, would allow people licensed to have a concealed handgun to take their weapons into schools and preschools, on college campuses, bars, state parks and buses.

Cook said he offered the measure to address complaints from his southern New Mexico constituents.

""There are a lot of people who have concealed carry permits that have to leave their gun in their cars to take their kids to school, which creates a burden on them," Cook said in a recent interview. "I would rather that gun be on the body of the responsible person who has met all the requirements for having a concealed carry permit than sitting in a car unattended."

I predict this will go down in flames. Good ole Zach just might be committing political hari-kari with nonsense like this. (Zach was appointed last year to replace an ailing legislator who retired. He (Zach) is an attorney with no previous political experience.

1. That sounds totally reasonable.
I mean, really, what could possibly happen? Every gun owner is totally trustworthy.

Only criminals use guns in illegal ways. I will grant you that once you use a gun in an illegal way then you become a criminal, so that argument is totally fallacious, but you know. I don't expect to ever hurt anyone with my gun so I should be able to go everywhere with it. Can't smoke in a bar, but can have a gun in a preschool. Makes perfect sense.

4. Deputy shot his wife to death on the courthouse steps locally.
No idea where this mindset comes from that makes people think that only professionals should have guns.

2. "who has met all the requirements"
12 hour class with an open book test. I wouldn't have a problem with this if the requirements were raised to a minimum of 40 hours training. I'd think that the training for a CCW should at least require that of a CDL. I've taken the class in 2 states. One was an open book test and the other, every question was reviewed just before the exam. No one failed and some seemed pretty questionable by the questions they asked the instructor. I have no problem with people with CCWs, I'm one, but better training and testing would insure better safety.
