Edited on Fri Feb-11-11 03:07 AM by RandomThoughts
Hard to know. I now know the security guys days after the protest started are most likely neocon, and sides with same group that ran Iraq occupation badly.

The pulling of police to cause security crises, then sending out goons, is same action that was done in early Iraq occupation. So that VP guy gets some advice from NeoCon group, best analytical guess.

I would guess the VP guy, if intelligence is the bigger problem, it is even possible that he is the bigger of problems. If he is security intelligence type.

Omar Suleiman & "Foreign Elements": A Chronology

1993: Omar #Suleiman becomes head of #Egypt's mukhabarat

1995: US begins rendition program. Arranges through #Suleiman. Obtains assurances re torture from Suleiman. According to Michael Scheuer, CIA agent, CIA knew + told policymakers assurances were worthless

9/22/1995: rendition of Abu Talal al-Qasimi, aka Talat Fuad Qassem. Qassem disappears, probably executed http://bit.ly/dEXR2A

1998: 5 Islamists rendered from Albania to Croatia after requisite assurances. http://nyr.kr/gQv6bD, http://bit.ly/dEXR2A. Jane Mayer, on 1998 renditions: "Attiya later alleged...he suffered electrical shocks to his genitals, was hung from his limbs..." Two others hanged. All five allege brutal torture.

10/29/2001: Mamdouh Habib rendered to #Egypt after diplomatic assurances. (Precise dates courtesy of Ghost Plane by Stephen Grey). Habib is brutally tortured. Alleges Suleiman personally participated, including ordering death of another prisoner: http://bit.ly/e5gLfO

Late 2001/early 2002 (date unclear): Sheikh al-Libi captured, rendered to #Suleiman's custody in Egypt. Under torture, Al-Libi "confesses" to Al Qaeda-Saddam Hussein links, evidence US uses to justify Iraq war. http://nyr.kr/f8zSW4. Years later, Al-Libi allegedly commits "suicide" in custody in Libya. Evan Kohlmann, an analyst who frequently serves as an expert witness for the prosecution in terrorism cases, has written that Al-Libi's death coincided with a visit by Suleiman to Libya, and suggested that al-Libi was killed at Suleiman's behest. http://bit.ly/esAE57

12/18/2001: Mohammed al-Zery and Ahmed Agiza rendered from Sweden to #Egypt after diplomatic assurances. Agiza and Al-Zery are tortured. Agiza's mother visits in prison, finds him "near breakdown"--face swollen and bloody. http://bit.ly/gZ3Mi4.

1/11/2002: CIA renders Muhammad Saad Iqbal to #Egypt from Indonesia. Tortured. http://nyti.ms/fpY4IZ, http://nyti.ms/F5GT

1/25/2002: Ahmed El-Maati transferred from Syria to #Egypt. Taken to mukhabarat hq, tortured. http://bit.ly/hWhHR6

June 2002: U.S. asks #Egypt for DNA sample from Muhammad Al Zawahiri. #Suleiman offers to cut off his arm. http://abcn.ws/f4LDS9. Ron Suskind describes the exchange between CIA agent & #Suleiman on pp. 132-133 of The One Percent Doctrine:

"A CIA operations manager called a chief at Egyptian intelligence.
He explained the situation.
The Egyptian listened. 'No problem,' he said. 'We'll get his brother, cut off his arm, and send it over.
'No...Christ!" the agency man stammered. 'No, just a vial of blood. A vial of blood's all we need.'
The Egyptian sighed. 'Fine. Whatever you want. You want blood. We'll send blood.'"

2/17/2003: Abu Omar rendered from Italy to Egypt after diplomatic assurances. Tortured. http://www.ghostplane.net/abuomar

8/1/2005: DOS cable states that US can rely on Egypt's diplomatic assurances not to torture prisoners transferred from Guantanamo because "General Soliman's word is the GOE's guarantee." http://bit.ly/hn2wIG

2007: Former CIA director George Tenet writes in his memoirs of Suleiman (p.79): "Umar is tall and regal looking, a very powerful man, very deliberate in his speech. He's also tough and engaging. In a world filled with shadows, he is straight up and down."

8/2/2010: Hillary Clinton calls #Suleiman and urges him to conduct an investigation into Tahrir Square violence. http://bloom.bg/hVRRhK. In announcing this call, @PJCrowley states of the attacks, contradicting virtually all eyewitnesses: "we don't know, at this point, who did it."

Q: how seriously is #Suleiman likely to take the United States' demand?

I'm not suggesting Clinton's demand for an investigation was made in the same bad faith as past requests for diplomatic assurances. I wouldn't blame people in Tahrir for thinking so, but what's going on in Cairo right now is too clearly disastrous for the U.S. for me to agree. But after 15 years of winking and nudging, how likely is the regime to take our demands seriously when we won't even admit the truth about what happened yesterday?

In Mubarak's Hometown, Residents See Him as Distant

BY TAMER EL-GHOBASHY

KAFR EL-MESELHA, Egypt— Before President Hosni Mubarak surprised his country Thursday by announcing he would not yet step down, a shopkeeper here in his hometown remembered coming to tears when the leader spoke nine days earlier.

"I cried," Baheyya Said, a 37-year-old shopkeeper, recalled as she sat on a crate outside her corner store earlier this week. "Not because he is a native son, but because I saw an old man holding on to power that was slipping away. I felt sorry for him."

The residents of Kafr El-Meselha appeared split much like the rest of the country as they ...

Mubarak Deepens Crisis
Egypt in Chaos as Leader Refuses to Go; He Has Ceded Power, Ambassador Says

By MARGARET COKER, CHARLES LEVINSON, TAMER EL-GHOBASHY and JONATHAN WEISMAN

CAIRO—Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak handed power to his vice president but retained his title, a half-measure that confused observers, angered opposition leaders and provoked an uproar from hundreds of thousands of protesters massed in the center of the country's capital.

The move sets up another conflict with the opposition movement, which has called on supporters to gather for a huge protest Friday. Expectations that the president would resign had built through the day, and the immediate reaction to the speech was anger, with protesters chanting "Leave, leave."

An Army officer using a loudspeaker tried to calm protesters. "Let's save our energy for tomorrow," a man screamed to the crowd. "Go home and sleep, because tomorrow will be the day of judgment."

The defiant tone taken by Mr. Mubarak—and widespread confusion about the meaning of his speech—left the Obama administration scrambling to devise its next steps in a crisis that appears out of its control.

On the economic impact of the Revolution: links
Sharing a couple of articles I stumbled upon today on the topic of the economic impact of the revolution, short and long term.

Report: Egypt protests cost $310M per day - Associated Press

Credit Agricole, in one of the first assessments quantifying the damage to the economy, said the crisis is costing Egypt at least $310 million per day. The bank also revised down its forecast for 2011 GDP growth to 3.7 percent from 5.3 percent and said the Egyptian pound could see a depreciation of up to 20 percent.

CIB creates youth-driven fund, CI Capital's Karim Helal talks economy - Daily News Egypt

“Investors will take a pause now so the flow of FDI is bound to suffer. I don’t think it’s going to disappear at all but capital by definition is a coward, so they will take a pause to assess the situation,” according to Helal.

Egypt senses economic opportunity - UPI.com

"Economists in Egypt said short-term hits to the economy could turn to long-term gains if two weeks of protests end up mobilizing the population"

Blocking Internet cost Egyptian economy at least $90M - Muslimvillage.com

The Egyptian government’s five-day block of Internet services cost the national economy at least $90 million, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) said Thursday. The Paris-based organization said telecommunications and Internet services account for between 3% and 4% of Egypt’s GDP, so the daily loss amounted to around $18 million.

Mubarak’s gamble

Earlier yesterday, I spoke to Wael Ghonim and he told me to expect some very good news around 5 pm that night, but he never elaborated what it is. Around 10 am, we heard that Saudi Arabia, alongside UAE and Kuwait, are creating an aid package to Egypt to possibly replace that of the US. Around 4 pm last night, we recieved the news that the President itends to step down tonight and give all of his responsbilities to the VP, Omar Suleiman. The Army then convened and issued its first statement, in a meeting without Mubarak or his VP around 5 pm. Around 9 pm Egypt time, Obama did a speech congratulating the people of Egypt for their march for democracy, so it seemed like a done deal. Finally, an hour later than originally announced, President Hosny Mubarak , against all expectations and information, refused to step down from his post, and said that he refuses any foreign interference in Egypt. The White House then announced that it has been double-crossed by the Egyptian regime.

...

    2) Mubarak has burned the image of Hossam Badrawy and the Wisemen council with his speech. Hossam Badrawy, the secretary general of the NDP, was the face of the NDP that announced Mubarak's intenetion to abdicate power later tonight. Now the man has no credibility. Same goes for the Wiseman Council, since Mubarak's speech was focused on how he has met their demands, which don't include him leaving. If most of them don't quit their posts today, I would be greatly surprised.

    3) We are seeing the first possible split in the power structure in Egypt: It seems that the Armed forces are in one camp, and the president, intelligence agencies and the republican guard in another camp. If you add to the equation the Ministery of Interior and the protesters, you have 4 players right now in an intensely unpredictable power struggle. We are now awaiting the second statement from the High council of amred forces to clearify their position once and for all. Whether the Army is with or against the people will determine a lot of today's outcome.

    4) Mubarak has now put the US in a corner: He double-crossed the White House, and announced his intentions to fight foriegn intervention. Adding to that the news of the arab aid, he is sending the US a clear message: "I could tell you and your aid to go to hell, and get the money from the arabs instead. Where does this leave your precious Israel? If you don't want us to cause problems on that front, you better shut up about what we will do and get with the program, or else!"

Israeli officials: Mubarak wants honorable exit

SLIDESHOW Previous Next

Anti-government protesters surround the state television building following Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's televised speech, on the Corniche in downtown Cairo, Egypt Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011. Mubarak refused to step down or leave the country and instead handed his powers to his vice president Thursday, remaining president and ensuring regime control over the reform process, which stunned protesters demanding his ouster, who waved their shoes in contempt and shouted, "Leave, leave, leave." JERUSALEM -- ...

Binyamin Ben-Eliezer of Israel's Labor Party says he spoke with Mubarak just hours before the Egyptian president's speech late Thursday in which he transferred authorities to his deputy but refused to step down. This angered hundreds of thousands of Egyptians demanding he relinquish his three-decade grip on power.

Ben-Eliezer told Army Radio on Friday that Mubarak knew "this was the end of the road" and wanted only to "leave in an honorable fashion."

Opposition lawmaker and former defense minister Shaul Mofaz told the same station on Friday that Mubarak wants to "end it on his feet and not on his knees."
