Great book about the Death Penalty and the criminal justice system.

Many references to the Texas law system. The governor is a right wing nut, not unlike their current governor!

A great read for liberals!

If non-fiction is your cup of tea then read "The Innocent Man: Murder and Injustice in a Small Town" which is a scarier than hell story about justice gone wrong. A true story that really exposes jail house snitches and confessions. Pick it up if you can!

1. Most of his books don't put the south in good light.

2. i wouldn't say that, he's done a LOT for mississippi
"the innocent man," jesus, what a heart-breaker, i will look for this new book

i also enjoy his fiction, he has kind of a warts 'n' all outlook on life and he pulls no punches and he doesn't bother to kiss anyone's ass about the south, but southerners love stories about their characters and do not care if the story is harsh as long as it rings true

for years there was a sign on the highway, "welcome to canton, home of the author of a time to kill, come kill some time with us!"

texas being texas, i doubt they would take such an open view of his hard-hitting stories and reporting but as far as i know he is very well-liked in the south (texas is not really the south, it's its own country, as texans are always quick to tell you)

4. Having read most of his books, only "A Time to Kill", "The Innocent Man", &
"The Chamber" depicted the South in an unfavorable light. Interestingly, the idea for "A Time To Kill" came when Grisham was a Mississippi lawyer & a similar case was being tried in the town courthouse. It was the talk of the town & interested Grisham a lot. He wrote the book --his first -- while he was still practicing law. It wasn't a big seller; it was "The Firm" that brought him success. He changed publishers, re-released "A Time To Kill", & it became a bestseller, too.

3. I read "The Innocent Man" & highly recommend it, too.
A mentally-ill alcoholic who was once a promising ball player was identified by a politically-connected jerk. What follows is the most harrowing tale of what's wrong with the legal & prison systems; why the death penalty should be abolished. The legal system seems to manifest huge egos where winning at any cost is more important than justice itself.

I will certainly read "The Confession". Grisham is my favorite author & I've read all but three of his books.

14. DNA tests are the best thing to happen in helping to prove innocence.
And yet the Oklahoma officials fought the idea of using DNA testing for Ron Williamson & Dennis Fritz. DNA testing is very expensive, but it would seem that this test would be mandatory before convicting a person to death.

15. Well... at LEAST before the execution takes place.
It's heinous enough to convict/incarcerate the wrong person. I can't even describe how heinous it is to actually execute the wrong person.

7. Read The Appeal.
The ending made me fling the book across the room.

NO supreme court justice should EVER be elected.
