Cafferty Asks Today: What would it take to get Americans into the street like Egypt's proteste
I didn't get my reply posted in time, so i thought I'd post it here for consideration:

What would it take Jack?

How about:

High un-employment, rising food costs, rising fuel costs, millions without healthcare, numerous corrupt politicians at all levels.

Wait a minute...this is what we HAVE, and we are still not in the streets.

How About:

No Super Bowls, Daytona 500's, American Idols, Stars that Dance, Facebooks, Tweets or the Internet.

Marx said: "Religion is the opium of the people".

Perhaps here in the States: "Recreation is the opium of the people.

Take that away and maybe we would take to the streets.

Maybe, without these distractions, we would have to pay attention to what matters for our future.

I wonder, if that happened here, would our 'authorities' show as much restraint as those in Egypt.

9. And just how many times over can Egypt blow up the world?

The difference with us is that every thing that goes on is extremely dangerous. Even the slightest problem in America could end us all.

2. it would also take a state owned media spouting lies
not just a corporate owned media (like the one Mr Cafferty makes a fool of himself for) spouting lies.

4. The USA is not even close to Egypt
Edited on Thu Feb-10-11 07:00 PM by Tx4obama

Here is the USA we have
1) Term limits on our presidents, and open elections with 'many' parties represented.
2) Freedom of Speech
3) Freedom of Press (Egypt has 'state Tv which airs government propaganda)
4) When Americans are arrested they are not 'disappeared' (like in Egypt), here in the USA they are 'charged' with a crime.
5) The majority of people with educations have enough money to marry, in Egypt educated folks without jobs can't get married do to the 'dowry system'.
6) The majority of Americans are not living at the poverty level, almost 50% of Egyptians live on $2 per day.
7) The USA does not enforce a 'curfew' like Egypt's national emergency curfew that they've been living under for the past 30 years.

ETC. ETC. ETC. ETC. ..........

26. Normally, that is absolutely true...
with the exceptions that are detailed in posts below about Muslims and other US citizens being renditioned or deported without full review. However, with full implementation of the Patriot Act's current (and intended inclusions) and in the face of another 911 type attack, I wouldn't be so confident. Ever vigilant.....

5. Two words... Kent State.... Our police and military would shoot us dead
Edited on Thu Feb-10-11 08:00 PM by hlthe2b
if ordered. Some (hopefully most) would question, for sure, but as we've seen in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is not hard to get some among our armed troops to abuse or shoot innocent men, women, and children. Look at how they have treated peaceful anti-war and political protests (e.g., RNC convention?)

We have the potential to shoot our own, just as Egypt's military COULD. Fortunately, the Egyptian miltary has thus far shown to be with the people (ignoring the pro-mubarak police and secret police for the moment).

11. That may be the stupidest thing anyone has written all day.
"We have become more fascist in that respect than Egypt's military, at least for the time being"

Can I have a some other writing samples, just to compare and make sure?

12. Maybe you weren't old enough to remember KS. I would never
have guessed they would kill innocent peaceful war protesters. They did.

You are a damned fool to think this can't happen here.

7. Put something that's actually educational on TV.
That would certainly drive Americans into the streets. Of course they would be complaining about missing the reality shows, shoot um ups, comedies, etc.

8. We have a system for changing the government
That actually works pretty damned well. You go to the voting booth. You pass constitutional amendments if you want to change our governing laws.

What you don't do is allow a very vocal minority to topple the government because they can't get the rest of the country to go along with their agenda.

and has also provided cover for Executive Order to kill a US citizen overseas SUSPECTED of being a terrorist, without due process. INS has also expelled those who turned out to be citizens to Mexico, including those who were mentally ill and could not mount any kind of defense..

16. Didn't a lot of muslims
get rounded up after 9-11?
Did a quick search for a link
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines03/0627-03.htm
http://ccrjustice.org/newsroom/press-releases/muslim,-arab,-south-asian-men-rounded-post-9/11-based-racial,-religious-prof

And we are rounding up people that are here illegally and snagging many who are citizens in the process.
We have FBI infiltrating peace groups and environmental groups.
We are not quite there but moving in that direction.
