Idaho PUC tightens limits on wind, solar projects
BOISE -- In a victory for Idaho's big utilities, state regulators temporarily tightened rules governing the electricity rates that wind and solar projects can demand for their projects.
They can now be no larger than 100 kilowatts, down from the 10 megawatt projects that previously could qualify.
Idaho Power Co., Avista and PacifiCorp had asked the Idaho Public Utilities Commission for the changes.
They contend that large, sophisticated developers such as General Electric Co. are breaking up large wind farms into 10 megawatt projects in order to game a system originally designed to help small power producers.
Regulators wrote Monday that the new rules will be in effect until the issues raised by the three electric utilities can be resolved.
