Egyptian anti-government protesters sleep on the tires of a military tank stationed on Tahrir (Liberation) Square,
which for the past two weeks has been the center of a sit-in protest by thousands of Egyptians demanding the government step down from power.
Protesters created a human shield and barricades to fend off pro-Mubarak supporters from getting into the square
and to prevent the military from an overnight attack to clear the square from the protesters.

Please rec if you read these, these get mercilessly unrec'd. Weird.

His clients have included both leftwing and rightwing terrorists, war criminals, and militants, including Holocaust denier Roger Garaudy, Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie (1987),<1> and international terrorist Ilich Ramírez Sánchez a.k.a. Carlos the Jackal (1994). In 2002, he offered to represent former Serbian President Slobodan Milošević, although Milošević declined any legal advice from any party. The media have sensationalized him with the sobriquet, "the Devil's advocate", and he himself has contributed to his "notorious" public persona by such acts as titling his autobiography The Brilliant Bastard and giving provocative replies in interviews. The real force of stability in Egypt is its people, not its government

By Amy Eskendar
11:55 a.m. EST, February 8, 2011

Although the outcome of the revolutionary uprising that is spreading across North Africa and the Middle East is still unclear, the simple fact that it is happening will likely alter the course of history. In coming to terms with the changed political landscape, U.S. policymakers first need to rethink the false dichotomy of stability/instability, upon which many U.S. foreign-policy decisions are based.

Governments — in particular authoritarian regimes such as Hosni Mubarak's 30-year dictatorship — are often described as representing "stability." The current uprising to topple this corrupt regime is generally perceived, even by its supporters, as a form of "instability." And yet, what I have seen unfolding with my own eyes over the past two weeks in Cairo belies this paradigm.

It is a remarkable feat, in and of itself, that millions of Egyptians have decided to attend public demonstrations on a daily basis that call for the overthrow of the Mubarak dictatorship — in spite of the fact that they know full well the degree of brutality this regime is capable of. On Jan. 28, Egypt's "Day of Rage," I saw peaceful demonstrators being subjected to water cannons and tear gas at short range; I saw them being dragged off into unmarked vehicles; and I even saw them being shot and killed by the police. Finally, I watched from an overlooking balcony as demonstrators captured Tahrir (Liberation) Square with nothing but their bare hands and sheer determination, routing the despised police force. To have done this during a communications blackout that lasted for almost a week is not only remarkable, but borders on the inexplicable.

A number of observers have marveled at the fact that this revolution is not only spontaneous but also leaderless. The vast majority of the demonstrators I have spoken to do not consider themselves "activists," nor are they organized in recognizable political parties or civic groups. However, this does not mean they are unorganized. On the contrary, one of the most underreported aspects of the current uprising in Egypt is the societal stability created through the self-organization of the people and, conversely, the attempts of the regime to sabotage these grass-roots initiatives.

Embattled Mubarak meets Emirati foreign minister

08 Feb 2011

CAIRO, Feb 08, 2011 (AFP) - Egypt's embattled Hosni Mubarak, facing revolt on his own streets, met the foreign minister of the United Arab Emirates in Cairo on Tuesday, his first high-level overseas visitor since the crisis began.

Many of Egypt's fellow Arab regimes have been embarrassed or rattled by the unprecedented protests, fearing that unrest could spread to their own cities.

Mubarak met the Emirati minister, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahayan -- brother to the current Emirati president, Abu Dhabi's emir Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahayan -- at the presidential palace in Cairo, an AFP journalist saw.

The Emirates has condemned "foreign attempts to interfere in the internal affairs of Egypt" -- a reference which many observers interpreted as tacit criticism of Iran, seen by some Arab rulers as a destabilising influence.

UAE: Arrest of activist gave a speech in favor of demonstrators in Egypt
emarati in 7 - Feb --2,011
Arabic + English

UAE authorities have arrested, on Friday evening, the UAE activist Mr. Mohammed Hassan Al Hammadi (50 years old), after delivering a speech in support of the demonstrators in "Al Tahreer square" in Egypt. Mr. Al Hammadi was arrested after delivering the speech after the Friday prayers, on the same date of what so called "the Friday of Departure" by the demonstrators in Egypt, which took place on the four th of February 2 011. The authorities have charged him with "Disturbing Public Security" and he was not allowed to talk to his family before yesterday.

Many activists condemned the act of the authorities, some of whom described as "repressive act that aggressively hamper freedom of opinion and expression," especially that the region is undergoing major revolutions that managed to overthrow presidents and governments, that had, for decades, pursued security-based treatment and the suppression of liberties with dissents of different opinion.
It's worth mentioning that "Human Rights Watch," a New York based Human Rights Organization, has recently launched its annual report on the UAE at a press conference in Dubai on the twenty-six th of January of this year. The report which is entitled " Stepped-Up Harassment of Rights Defenders "widely criticized the harassment of Human Rights Activist in the country. Sarah Leah Whitson, the Executive Director of the Middle East and North Africa in the organization, stated "The UAE should take a long, hard look at what happens to governments that suppress the rights of its citizens to speak out or that think they can control the information people share ". "Tunisians are not the only ones in the Arab world who will insist that no government has the right to trample their rights." Whitson added.

Egypt VP: Protests cannot be allowed to go on long
By MAGGIE MICHAEL and SARAH EL DEEB Associated Press © 2011 The Associated Press
Feb. 8, 2011, 4:33PM

CAIRO — Vice President Omar Suleiman warned Tuesday that "we can't put up with" continued protests in Tahrir for a long time, saying the crisis must be ended as soon as possible in a sharply worded sign of increasing regime impatience with 16 days of mass demonstrations.
Suleiman said there will be "no ending of the regime" and no immediate departure for President Hosni Mubarak, according to the state news agency MENA, reporting on a meeting between the vice president and the heads of state and independent newspapers.

He told them the regime wants dialogue to resolve protesters' demands for democratic reform, adding in a veiled warning, "We don't want to deal with Egyptian society with police tools."

At one point in the roundtable meeting, Suleiman warned that the alternative to dialogue "is that a coup happens, which would mean uncalculated and hasty steps, including lots of irrationalities. We don't want to reach that point, to protect Egypt."
Pressed by the editors to explain the comment, he said he did not mean a military coup but that "a force that is unprepared for rule" could overturn state institutions, said Amr Khafagi, editor-in-chief of the privately-owned Shorouk daily, who attended the briefing. "He doesn't mean it in the classical way."

"The presence of the protesters in Tahrir Square and some satellite stations insulting Egypt and belittling it makes citizens hesitant to go to work," he said. We can't put up with this for a long time, and this crisis must be ended as soon as possible.
He warned that calls by some protesters for a campaign of civil disobedience are "very dangerous for society and we can't put up with this at all."

Only International Pressure and media exposure will force his release, otherwise he will be kept in secrecy in the State Security Prison.

..............................

Here is his information. A photograph will be coming shortly either this evening or tomorrow morning.

He is being kept in the same compound where Wael was:

State Security Investigative Services HQ
7th District
Nassr City, CAIRO 72711

He has not been physically tortured, but was roughed up, and is being kept blind-folded and incommunicado.

No charges have been leveled against him yet but bogus investigation for espionage, passing information to foreign intelligence services, and engaging in activities to overthrow the government of Egypt.

Protesters attack police stations in several provinces

The regime has to understand that it’s unacceptable to have those torturers back on our streets again….

...

The resident had gone out during curfew hours on Monday night and was shot to death after failing to respond to the police officer’s warnings. He was killed instantly.

Following the incident, village residents torched the police station in which the officer was taking cover, leading to the death of the officer and total destruction of the station and its civil registry. Other police personnel managed to escape before they were caught by residents.

In related news, police forces on Tuesday used live ammunition to shoot protesters in the Wadi Gedid Governorate, southwest of Cairo. The protesters had voiced objections to the reinstatement of an officer whom they described as “dictatorial.”

According to eyewitnesses, 61 people were injured in clashes with security forces in the province’s capital, Kharga.
Local residents had rejected the return of Captain Ahmed al-Sokkary, whom authorities had dismissed during the first days of nationwide protests calling on President Hosni Mubarak to resign.

The west clings on to the old Arab order at its peril
Arabs across the region are ready for life after the autocrats. If the west remains reticent, they will look elsewhere for support

Rageh Omaar
guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 8 February 2011 15.14 GMT

In every corner of the Arab world there is the open appreciation that this is a moment when the world has changed' Photograph: Felipe Trueba/EPA

...

Of course, old habits and instincts forged over three decades of mutual strategic interests are not going to crumble overnight. President Obama and Senator John McCain have both been at pains to stress how Mubarak has been a friend to the US and an ally on the questions of Israel-Palestine and Islamist movements. Now, after days of policy being made on the hoof – one minute saying Egypt was stable, and the next calling for change – Washington seems to think that they and Mubarak are out of the woods.

...

The Arab world has been undergoing irreversible social change in this period that the west and Arab rulers just ignored. One incredible statistic sums this up: two-thirds of the 350 million people in the Arab world are under 35.

...

This isn't just about the buzzwords of democracy, human rights and free and fair elections. It is about hard-nosed calculations of where our interests in the Middle East lie in the next 30 years. Make no mistake, while this new emerging generation in the Arab world aspires to the western ideal of an open and free life, they have grown up in societies and economies where slowly but tangibly, countries such as Russia, India, South Africa and most prominently China are starting to do business and woo the young entrepreneurs, bureaucrats and diplomats of the Arab world.

A question that has been asked in a whisper around the Middle East in the past five years has been: why always wait around for the west when we have the Chinese knocking on our doors, who don't make us jump through one hoop after another. Just look at where China has got a foothold recently – it's an oil producer in Iraq and Sudan, it has huge interests in Iran and it's heavily engaged and drilling for oil in Ethiopia. I've even met Chinese businesspeople and technicians in northern Pakistan, and on a beach on the Red Sea in northern Somalia, barely three hours' sail from Yemen.

45. What is interesting here is that China is making investments
in large projects where the USA foreign policy and military have been concentrated all across the globe. The Chinese practice mercantalism while we war.

The Chinese reap the wealth of the illegal wars of the USA?

In Afghnaistan, the USA (and NATO) are spending lives and dollars and the Chinese mine copper and other industrial metals in Afghanistan to mutual benefit outside the "Coalition".

Two protesters scale the main gate at Egypt's parliament building on Tuesday night, erecting a sign that says: "Sorry.. Closed until the downfall of the regime." Hundreds of protesters began gathering at the parliament building as a result of the overflow crowd in central Cairo's Tahrir Square, and to expand the reach of the demonstrations.
