Redwall author Brian Jacques dies aged 71 (BBC)
A former merchant sailor whose children's books sold millions worldwide has died aged 71.

Brian Jacques' Redwall series of books were translated into 29 languages and sold 20m globally.

He first wrote the series, set in an abbey populated by animals, for children at the Royal Wavertree School for the Blind in Liverpool.

The Liverpool-born writer's weekly show, Jakestown, ran on BBC Radio Merseyside for more than 20 years.

He died after a heart attack at the weekend and leaves a wife and two grown up sons.

1. These books may have been for children, but I enjoyed them.
I heard Walter Mosley speak at an author's forum and he said the only difference between books for children and adults is the age of the protagonist.

2. I love these books.
They were cleverly done and suitable for all ages. Each type of animal seemed to have its own little social niche and specialized field of work. They even had their own dialects! The villains were suitably slimy. It was fun to read these books out loud to children, but just as much fun to read them for myself.

I will miss this author.

4. So sad. My son and I read up to Triss together.
When we started he would just listen. By the time we got to Triss, he was reading out loud to me. Got too old after that, but it's a memory both he and I will share forever.

A great loss in the passing of Mr. Jacques. Safe passage to a great story teller.
